Terry Jones: He's baaaaack – Edmonton Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli looking like the resident genius
For the entire calendar year, Peter Chiarelli has been a combination of the village wart carrier and village idiot.
Friday night at Rogers Place, almost everywhere you looked, the Edmonton Oilers general manager appeared to be the resident genius.
It was a night when all Chiarelli’s major moves combined together to create the storyline of a game and, indeed, the season to this point.
First, of course, there was coach Ken Hitchcock. Then there was his $2.5 million ‘mistake’ Mikko Koskinen keeping a clean sheet for most of the night while the Oilers methodically went to work on the Philadelphia Flyers.
And then there was the GM’s other off-season acquisition, Alex Chiasson, scoring to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead that became 3-0 in the second period and ended up 4-1 with Connor McDavid scoring his second goal of the night and 19th of the season into an empty net, as both he and Leon Draisaitl made it a three-point night.
With the win, the Oilers moved into a three-way tie for second place in the Pacific Division with the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks, with 39 points in 33 games.
You wanted the Oilers to be in contention at Christmas? You can’t get much more in contention than that!
As the days count down on the final month of 2018, Chiarelli is getting close to the point of restoring public confidence in his ability.
After this story was written, the Oilers lost their next 6 games, including 5 in a row at Rogers Place. Chiarelli was fired less than 6 weeks after this story was posted.

While it isn't the Oilers, who could forget the 2017 West Final at McMahon where Jason Maas elected to kick a field goal on 3rd and 4 inside the red zone while they down by 7 with under two minutes left.
Edmonton officially passed Calgary Saturday night, in both the macro and micro sense of the word. The Oilers moved nine points ahead of the Flames in the standings and will not be caught by their rivals this season. In the bigger picture, Edmonton is where Calgary was supposed to be by now, well on their way to being a top-10 National Hockey League team with an long and bright future.
Calgary has been the better franchise for many years. They are not anymore, and are firmly in the chase position from this point forward.
Following season, the Flames had 6 more points. The season after that, the Flames finished with 28 more points (and placed first in the West).

This is great. Suck it Oilers. Here are a couple top tens. I love that most of these don't even need an explanation:
On ice:
1. 8-1 Flames with Stajan penalty shot!
2. Anaheim Game 5 comeback.
3. Eakins swarm leading to this guy scored.
4. Crosby scores one of the goals of the decade to win in OT.
5. Elimination Anaheim game 7.
6. All the many times an ex-Oiler has gone on to succeed elsewhere and contributes to beating their former team.
7. McDavid flubs a penalty shot.
8. Game 4 round 1 7-0 San Jose.
9. Yakupov celebrates first NHL goal.
10.Most recent Flames win to demoralise the Oilers in last BoA of decade.
Off ice:
1. The trade is one for one. Then Hall wins the Hart.
2. That press conference.
3. Skype firing.
4. Bad drafting but most of all picking Puljujarvi over Tkachuk.
5. Keep failing upwards MacTavish is GM.
6. All those crazy contracts. Koskinen, the 6x6s, etc.
7. The Reinhart trade and subsequent success of the Ilses picks.
8. That Spector article saying the Oilers had passed the Flames for good.
9. McDavid missing the skills comp with the flu.
10. Losing a year of eligibility on Draisaitl and rushing prospects in general.
