Would be a real shame if this lead to a Wideman effect all season for the Sharks.

What he was doing was officiating a game that already had two line brawls, and was in between a hot head in Kane and a guy willing to mix things up in Engelland. Given Kane had already turned back to jaw a couple times, the linesman quite reasonably thought that the third turn would be re-engage again, so he physically restrained Kane. That they tripped is just an inadvertent aspect of this.

Honestly, I'm surprised the league gave him 3. I suspect part of that might be specifically to keep him out of the first two games - both against Vegas - to help keep things calmer.

It’s automatically at least 3 games if you shove an official. So doesn’t matter what you thought of the video, if you saw Kane shove a linesman then it was suspension worthy. Those are the rules.

I would've given him 10 games.

I love how clueless Kane is about his own culpability. In his mind he got "slammed" from "behind" after "minding his own business". No mention of the slash he gave the ref (intentional or not).

I hope he keeps it up!

We are all entitled to an opinion. The official was the aggressive one. I don't like Evander Kane either, but he didn't deserve a suspension.

That's not how "rules" work.

Implying that NHL officiating is racist. Bold strategy.

Yes.

Did that contravene the rule listed in the above tweet?

Yes.

Does Kane deserve the three games.?

Again, unequivocally and factually, yes.

No opinions, all facts.

The rule of the law is if you push a ref getting out of a scrum that it's a 3 game suspension - that's the rule. There is no arguing or opinion involved when you see that Kane pushed the ref, that is what happened. So by the rule that's a 3 game suspension.

Kane pushed the ref, and there is nothing in the rule book saying he's allowed to push the ref if the ref grabs him first. The ref in this situation was just doing his job to try and stop the situation from escalating even further in a 5-1 pre-season game that already had two line brawls.

And it looks worse on the ref because they both fell over because Kane wouldn't stop resisting.

Initially the linesman goes to get in between Kane and Engelland - he actually is kind of grabbing Engelland and then he (accidentally) eats a slash from Kane who was trying to slash Engelland.

Play goes on and it looks like Kane is going to engage again - so now this time the linesman decides to try to grab Kane to prevent it from happening.

Kane at this point still keeps resisting the ref, their feet get caught up and that causes them to fall down. It wasn't a "tackle" by the ref.

Then Kane and the ref both get up and he decides to push the ref to try to get the ref off him because he was pissed off the ref grabbed him. Pretty much exact scenario for why that rule is in the rule book.

Two separate incidents, the "accidental" slash should have been 3 games and the pushing of an official should have been 10 games..

13 games is what I guessed.

As for the "What was the official doing?" stuff, he obviously was trying to intervene and stop the situation from getting out of control and slipped when he grabbed Kane and fell on Kane. If he doesn't fall on Kane and he just wraps him up, it's something we see every game.. a ref tying up a player who is going off.

So in your mind, on a play where Kane took a big run at Engelland, then tried to slash Engelland while the latter was being restrained, only to be restrained himself when it looked like he might be coming back for a third run, the linesman was the aggressive one?

That's actually kind of a remarkable take.

Kane was out of control. He's lucky he didn't get the mandatory 10 games.

Agreed.

Plus, he should be buying that linesman a beer. Engelland would have wrecked him.

A little more restraint should have been shown by everyone involved.
