Dom Luszczyszyn of the Athletic did a piece earlier this summer on the ten best contracts by the numbers, in terms of expected win contribution over the remaining term of the deal, measured in total surplus value (i.e. how much they should make over the remaining deal term vs how much they will make).

The top ten were:
  1. David Pastrnak
  2. Brad Marchand
  3. Sean Couturier
  4. Nathan MacKinnon
  5. Aleksander Barkov
  6. Timo Meier
  7. John Klingberg
  8. Johnny Gaudreau
  9. Brett Pesce
  10. Sebastian Aho

I don't know if one can measure the value of contracts before the season has started. Look at James Neal and Troy Brouwer. Two players that had a history of consistent production and then dropping off the face of the earth.

I'd like to see the great value contracts of 2018-2019, ELCs excluded.

Flames best value is probably Gaudreau but last year it was Gio IMO.
DeSmith who is on waivers?

Isn't that pretty much what this thread is? I think roughly all the names have been players that are in the middle of existing contracts. So for 19-20, their percentage of teams cap might be down slightly, but the cap hits are the same.

Yep that guy. Of course I posted this before he was waived but he was one of the best backups in the league and carried the Penguins while Murray was hurt. Apparently Pens are so cap strapped that they couldn’t afford $1.25 million for a backup to a starter with durability concerns.

You’d think he gets claimed but what do I know.

Was that before he signed the offer sheet? Can't be after.

Aho's value is okay. He was 21st in scoring last year and is now the 23rd highest paid skater in the league.

If you believe last year was just a taste of things to come and Aho has yet to reach a high ceiling this contract could turn out to be viewed as positively as the MacKinnon one in a few years.

Yes, his contract is fair. Hardly a 'best value contracts in the league' candidate.
