so to make these contacts even Tkachuk would have to extend for 3 years at 34.5
or 11.5 x 3
Love those bridge deals.
even Laine would have to extend 10.5 x 4
The Bridge contracts are show me contracts and the players signing them have to perform at a really high level to match Ratanen's pay day.

Whatever.
I prefer to have all the best players playing. Makes for a better product and more entertaining.
It is small-minded to want opposition players out of the lineup for whatever reason.

I'm sure MacKinnon will wipe his tears with his next contract when he becomes the highest paid player in the league.

Love the player...and would rather pay this for Rantannen than what Toronto paid for Marner, but I am still clearly not calibrated to the "new" market...

I know what you are saying but it also depends on when you want the cap hit. The Avs will appreciate the lower cap hit when it comes time to extend Mackinnon. For the Flames they sacrifice the future years for cap space now, when they need it.

I completely understand what you are saying, but while the avs may get a discount (% of cap wise), in years 4-6, I would be more comfortable paying this kind of money for a repeat proven winger, than betting the $1M or less discount on 1-2 years of high output.

After seeing this deal, I think Dubas deserves the award of GM of the year as voted by the players.

He'll likely be the highest paid player in the league for a little while when he becomes a UFA. He should be asking for the max too.

Many players have been upset over the years thinking they should be paid more. Hell Flames had a big name player who refused to honor his contract.
But I’d be surprised if there is actual jealousy among teammates very often. Now a big money guy that doesn’t put in the effort undoubtedly affects morale and those kinds of players usually get traded (for Lucic in the Flames case).

I think it is interesting too. I think it would be hard to not think about it. Competitiveness and wanting to win aside maybe it's different when you're talking about millions instead of 10's of thousands. If your employer paid you 60k and a younger "arguably" less talented co-worker 90k how would it affect your working environment?

I don’t think it would matter much between players who are all earning the higher salaries. However the elimination of the middle class of earners on NHL rosters will be interesting to watch. Its not a game of individuals like baseball. Even the most talented and highly paid players need happy foot soldiers to win in hockey. Keeping the dressing room happy may prove increasingly difficult

If you ignore AAV and look at actual dollars, the difference is even bigger. Rantanen is going to collect $12M on his paycheque this year, versus $6.75M for MacKinnon.
Of course, last year Rantanen was "only" making $1.6M on his ELC (with bonuses), so I guess it's his turn this year to pick up the restaurant tab. Life moves quick when you're a talented RFA...

Too bad this didn't extend until at least past their home opener...
At this AAV (or a touch more) I would have expected it would've bought the full 8 years. Still not bad for the team to have a top flight winger who just had a monster playoff performance locked up for 6 years though. I think the player wins this deal, but not by as much as Toronto's two RFA's did.

Had an idea!

If you had to resign a new contract every X amount of years at your job, chances are things would be looked at a bit differently.
Sure, he is making more now, but at some point the guy resigned a new deal 2 years from now will make more.
Either way, just another signing to enforce the fact that Dubas is a terrible GM.
