What is the going rate just so we have a comparison? No point in me telling you that I found a $1150 flight when $1200 is the norm. And on the flip side I wouldn't want to not tell you about a $1150 flight if $2000 is the norm.

Well I've been pretty busy but I think the cheapest I found was $4800, which seems like a lot. Hopefully it should be easy to beat...

Never mind, that link didn't work.
I searched Expedia for a round trip leaving Edmonton going to Cape Town somewhere around those dates, and the best price it came up with was 2300.

I recommend supporting a travel agency, yes, because I own one. At least give them an opportunity to quote the trip for you. And when you book through an agent, then at least you have a physical contact person to talk to in case of any discrepancies.
if you want a quote call me, it doesnt cost you nor obligate you to anything and if you book through me, I give you the CP discount and also make a contribution on your behalf to CP.
Its a win/win for all.

^^^go visit Sample. Given what you want to do it's pretty tough booking on your own. You could do sneaky things like fly Zoom to Paris which would open up options for a variety of airlines. I did a quick look at Paris to Cape Town and got a bunch of different airlines in the $800+ CAN range. Trouble is even through Travelocity it's not easy to figure out which one have availability. This is where a good agent come in useful, they can see more than us mere motrals can.

When the journey is as long and complicated as it is to S.Africa you are usually much better off going to a travel agent. The problem is that most travel sites will only link you within travel alliances and/or along major connection points. you likely need to get outside of those bounds to get a decent fair along with good routing.
In my experience you are better off going with one in chinatown or the like because they charge the lowest commisions but do the most searching.
You might find a good balance between fairs and routing if you look at a direct flight to London or NY and then get the cheapest direct flight form there. (OR in other words just search JFK-S.Africa locations and then buy the Air Canada fair to JFK seperate.)

Gotta go with zoom air. Dirt cheap and really not so bad service-wise. If you're going to europe, zoom flys from calgary to london, glasgow, and a couple other places, then, get an easyjet or ryanair flight to whatever town you're planning on staying in. You can probably go round trip from calgary to london to rome to london to calgary for less than 900 loonies.
Beware of long distances between airports. Gatwick to Stansted is a little more than a hop and a skip. More like a 2.5 hour bus ride in god traffic. Akin to airdrie to okotoks. So plan for it when scheduling your conector. I think easyjet flies out of gatwick, but ryanair doesn't.
Oh, Terravision is your friend. It is a bus company that will take you from most airports to most train stations. Almost always the best deal.
One more bit of advice to anyone travelling Italy. Trenitalia is wayyy cheaper than eurorail pass. If your sole destination is Italy, screw the eurorail pass. Inter-city trains are so cheap, you'll leave wondering why you didn't go to every city.
ps, caio from Cinque Terra. First time here, and loving it. Y'all gotta check it out. Back to Roma tomorrow where I'll be looking forward to read the judas gospel thread. I've got money on a Cheese and Firefly scrap.

Dont know much about from London but if you flyzoom it to Glasgow you can get to Cape Town with KLM for about £450 which is roughly $900 Canadian i think.
