If so then that makes some sense, although i question why they would choose Gillies over Parsons or Schneider for target practice.
If the heat are still playing meaningful games (which, I don't know) they'll want their best goalie in net for those games.

Jon Gillies isn't their best goalie. So he's up here.

Heat are Eliminated, and may want to get Parson some starts before the season is done.

All our minor league goalies stumbled this year other than Mason Macdonald.

Could see Schneider going as the back up for the Heat while McDonald gears for the playoffs in the E.

Going to be interesting next year in the A though as MacDonald has more than earned his right to play in the A next year with his great year.

The Mav's do not sniff the playoffs without him.

I hope this is just for practice purposes or a minor tweak. We need both goalies to be available for the playoffs.

Gillies has played much better as of late. If one of Smith or Rittich got injured, he'd probably be my first pick of the three Stockton goalies.

He had a poor season overall, but he was definitely their best goalie over the last two months. I think he played nearly every game.

I want to like Parsons, but the guy always seems to be injured or out of the lineup. Schneider was great in the AHL; pretty awful in the ECHL. McDonald had a solid ECHL season, but still - it’s McDonald.

As mediocre as Gillies has been, he’s at least been available to play (since his surgery anyway) and is the Flames most experienced minor league goalie. I don’t really want to see him in net, but he’s likely their best option if they need a third guy.

It doesn't matter. There is practically no chance that a third goalie will log a single minute in any playoff games. If Smith is injured, Rittich gets all of the starts. If Rittich is injured Smith gets all of the starts.

I think the tandem in Stockton next year will be Parsons and McDonald.

Gillies will get to battle it out with the Russian goalie to be Rittich's backup. If Gillies wins, the Russian probably goes back to the KHL. If the Russian wins, Gillies goes on waivers or the Flames find him a new home.

Not really thread related but: I think the Flames have seen enough to know Rittich needs a veteran to play alongside him. Either they go out and make a move to bring a guy in, or - and brace yourself - they bring Smith back if he has a good playoff run.

Is Kansas still playing? Maybe that is were the extra goalie in Stockton is coming from.

Agreed -- I just meant who I would dress as the backup.

And if both are injured?

Classic Trolliving

Have Peters place Smith in Starters net, Recalls Gillies, and then start Rittich game 1

I'd still jump past Gillies. Mason McDonald's probably been our best prospect goalie all year and Tyler Parsons has a better SV% than Gillies in the AHL and is generally better IMO.

At that point I suspect it won't matter who plays.

*EDIT* To further clarify, I don't necessarily mean that this situation would doom the Flames's playoff hopes (although it probably would), but rather think that there is no basis of each potential goalie's play from which to make a strong argument. This is not the same as the deciding between Jeff Zatkov and Matt Murray in 2016.

Even with how good Gillies has been lately? McDonald hasn't played in Stockton this season.

Isn't it possible it's insurance in case someone gets sick or injured and you end up with some college kid as your emergency back up for a playoff game?

Insurance two days before the first game of the playoffs? I doubt it. As mentioned several times already and posted by Derek Wills, Jon Gillies is here to work on the practice roster.
