The Habs have four games remaining. One is against the Leafs on HNIC. The other three are against the three division leaders who aren't the Flames.
Things don't look good for them.

I feel bad for the Columbus GM. There's no chance, based on past moves that the owner didn't tell him to go all in.

I've seen a lot of sentiment on this board and others of people hoping the Blue Jackets miss after all the trades they made. Why? Trade deadline day and the weeks leading up to it are usually something every hockey fan looks forward to. When a trade deadline passes with little movement it's boring. If CBJ gets in and somehow finds a way to win a round and maybe go on a bit of a run - there's the possibility other teams might try to replicate it next year. I'd hate to see them fail and everyone get even more stingy at next years TDD.
As for Carolina - I really don't get why with all the crappy things going on in the world the Storm Surge is what people decide to be vocal about. Everyone loved it when Dougie was photobombing post game interviews here a few years back. It's just having a bit of fun and isn't hurting anyone. I can only imagine how the local news there would show off the latest Surge and people would be talking about it at work. For everyone bitching about non-hockey markets that struggle and how they should move - things like this should show how a market can get invigorated and involved. And if you truly don't like it that's fine - you're a curmudgeon.
Oh, and #### the Habs. Hope they miss for the next decade or two.

you draft your playoff pool before the teams are set? That sort seems like drafting an NFL fantasy team in July.

Carolina has been one of the better teams in the league after trade deadline, and I have a soft spot for them anyway. I really hope they make it. Couple of games back they were as much as five points up and looked pretty safe, at this point if they miss the playoffs it would be a massive disappointment.
Columbus missing would be so funny. It would definitely be the end of Kekäläinen. Which I think is coming his way, the risks he's taken with that team this season were insane. They have only one draft pick in this draft, and are missing their 2nds for the next two drafts too, and another 3rd next draft.
With Duchene, Panarin, Dzingel, MqQuaid and Bobrovsky all ready for UFA, that team could be rather completely screwed.

You know what's also fun? Draft picks, young players and player development.
If I was a BJ's fan, I would absolutely rather have a bubble team rich with draft picks than a bubble team with no draft picks.
Columbus has to pretty much make the conference finals for their deadline moves to be worth it, and even then if they end up losing Duchene and Dzingel for nothing (on top of Panarin and Bobrosky), that'll be just ugly.
They've also set themselves up to be desperate in the UFA contract negotiations, which isn't likely to help their situation.
As a Flames fans, I don't look forward to playoff rentals either. I'm much more into following how our draft picks turn into NHL players.

I hope Columbus makes it they should be admired for going all in where they were sitting in the standings instead of just going tank mode unreal

Players obviously had enough of the storm surge...they likely haven't wanted to do it for a while but the media/team pressure made them continue.
The fact they stopped with a handful of games left tells me they want to focus on hockey and not motivate the other team. They said they were going to do one last one win or lose...then skipped it.

No, that's not fun. That's responsible. That's like when you have that 'what would you do with money if you won the lottery' conversations with a buddy and he goes off on paying bills, and setting up GIC's and installing new windows. Sure, responsible and probably what you should do, but not fun.
I like the Bruins and the Flames and I would much prefer they take the measured approach to building a team - but that doesn't mean I don't live in the world of short attention spans where I get excited when the B's are rumoured for Mark Stone. If Columbus goes all in, see's some result because of it, then other teams mimic it - my trade deadline day next year will be that more exciting.

being a sports fan does not mean always cheering for what is the most rational, but it is good to remember exactly what is rational
exciting things are not always well-reasoned but that doesn't mean they aren't exciting

Totally agree. Love that they went all in and they are my Eastern team for this year as a result.

If you are on Team Chaos, you should 100% be behind Columbus this season, not because of their team this season, but because of the teams they will inspire in future seasons.

The thread title should be expanded to include the Metropolitan Division race. There are five teams from that divsion and all of them can still win the division. Columbus and Carolina would need to win their games and the Capitals would have to lose their games. The Capitals are the only team from the division that has clinched a playoff spot.
