Pure speculation on my part but Fox was going to go to UFA no matter what. That’s what I got from Tre’s general mood when he talked about it. It made me laugh when Fox said “I never said I wasn’t gonna sign” after Tre came out and said as much. It was more like “I never said I wasn’t gonna sign, but I never said I would.” is what he should have said.
I highly doubt he would have been traded if he was committed to signing with Calgary, but that’s another debate.
I wasn’t convinced that his decision was specific to the Flames to begin with, so not a huge surprise. It will be interesting to see if the Canes trade his rights to a different team and what they get in return. If he hasn’t made an official declaration yet, maybe there is a team he would leave university for still.

Risk playing in Charlotte for a year, making peanuts, and if you're really lucky, be forced to play for a specific NHL team for the next 6 years or finish your Harvard education and then get to decide which NHL team. Doesn't particularly seem like a hard choice to make.

Fox is gone either way. I'd just as soon see him play in Carolina as New York. There's no upside to being thought of in the league as a GM who fleeces other GMs. Carolina gave us plenty of value in that transaction. Plus they're a non-entity in another conference. Screw the Rangers.
Can someone enlighten me why this is a good thing for the NHL. It seems to be BS, a team uses a pick in good faith and then hold their breath waiting to see if the control the player or not. Is this just because of draft ages in major junior versus NCAA?
I think there should be some reasonable compensation to the team that loses the player (I.eCanes). Like a second rounder. Make it less enticing for teams to sign these guys without giving up something decent.
If Fox had actually wanted the quickest path to the NHL, he’d have signed with Calgary last summer and he’d have played the minutes that Ras has this year.
He was looking to get his degree the whole time, I’m sure.
It would be wild if the Flames signed him next summer though, wouldn’t it? Once Brodie is successfully run out of town, BT can avoid another Neal/Brouwer/Russell fiasco in Hamonic and have two wide open top 4 spots for Andersson and Fox to slide right into.
What the hell does this mean? Hamonic is a fiasco? Brodie needs to be run out of town? I wouldn't give Fox a spot over either of those two at this point, or possibly any future point.
Fox has a lot to do to prove that he can even skate at an NHL level. I'm far from certain that he can hack it.

I still don’t consider it a “fleecing”. It was a good deal, that has ended up working out really well for the Flames, and a bit for the Hurricanes. They are still in the hunt for a wildcard spot.
Yes, maybe they lose Fox and Ferland. But they would have lost Hanifin and Lindholm LAST summer. So, not bad. I can’t imagine they would have received a larger return from anyone else.
