With Stone and Valimaki the Flames have 10 NHL-caliber d-men. That's quite the luxury. Hope Oscar has another good game tomorrow, I liked how looked last time out.

Hopefully the goaltending continues to stabilize into the playoffs. To make a run, you just simply need a goalie that is performing very well.

Kipper in his prime sure. The last few years not so much.

His last season was bad.
His 2nd last season though? 70 games played, 2.35 GAA and .921 SV%

I’d see if you can get Vasilevskiy off waivers. I hear he’s gonna be good.

He could probably drop his fishing for few months, come in, and look like he never left...Nothing against Smitty, but what a likeable tandem him and BSD would make!

Had an idea!

All of a sudden our defense is extremely deep.
Stone is a good 5/6 guy who can play 3/4 time.
Very important going down the stretch and during the playoffs.

Aren't they going to put Stone on the wing because of his body type or something?
It's fun to look at the D and think that any if the 10 guys could play (at least on the third pairing) and the quality wouldn't change that much?
The depth on this team at D and forward is just fun to watch.

For me it was the opposite. He seemed a bit flat footed although his IQ was decent. I'd much rather Kylington in there. This was my worry that the new toy would be taking away games from him.

Kylington is a very promising young D. Oscar , on a very short viewing, provides more stability on D at this point.
However, things can change in a hurry.

All it takes is one meh game from Fantenberg to get Kylington games again. But I am totally OK with resting him too.
I think you want to test Fantenberg out in game situations that matter, right now it's clinching top spot in the West. You do sub him in as well at the end when you're resting your guys, but you want him battle-tested now and used to our systems ASAP. Also sitting 2nd overall like we are allows for the tinkering chemistry with certain defence partners early. You have a bit of buffer to do this far before the actual need to substitute in after the playoffs start.
I do expect him to see more games in a row as long as he doesn't play badly. Peters does have some problems to solve, but with the glut of defenders we have they are of the good kind of problem.
You are Peters. How do you balance the following: - Ensuring Kylington is properly healing his LBI up
- Getting Valimaki comfortable at the NHL level again
- All the Fantenberg stuff mentioned above
- Easing Stone back in
- Hey, Rasmus looks real good as Gio's RD
- Brodie's occasional struggles

Kylinfton is dealing with a minor injury, no? It’s his first year in the NHL, and if he is a little banged up then there is little wonder the coaches would be holding him out.

Yeah I see it more as getting Fantenberg up to speed while Kylington rests, rather than Fantenberg taking his spot. I wouldn't worry as a Kylington fanboy

Rittich is better than Smith and deserves both the faith of fans and the coaches after the season he has had.
Start your number 1 goalie, David Rittich.

Both guys are playing extremely well right now and the team is rolling, so I don't think it matters who they start.

Kylington is still nursing an owie. Plus I think any new guy needs at least two games in a row for the team to get a real sense of what he is anyway.

I have a feeling if this wasn’t the night it is, it would be Rittich. But because of the very unconventional evening as far as routine, with probably a warm up, then a ceremony, then probably a shorter warmup, I bet Peters goes with Smith.
For all the hand wringing around here with why he started Smith starting post AS break, it’s because he trusts the vet to be in the right frame of mind coming back from the break, given his experience. Same would go here tonight, Smith has likely played in a game or two or three in his career with a pregame ceremony and all the inactivity and breaking of routine that goes with it.
Peters seems to have a very defined mentality around Rittich and ensuring that Rittich is in a situation where his confidence has no choice and no excuse but to remain high. As soon as he sees that confidence dip in games he pulls him, so I don’t think Peters will throw Rittich into uncharted waters.
I predict a clunker of a game overall because of that, and because Minny has never fallen too far from the trap tree no matter who coaches, and they need some points, even if it’s just one, in the playoff race.
