For a 33 year old goalie? Yikes.

Flames should look sharp after a good run of practices here at home finally.

I’m a little split on this. Smith has been playing well and if he can pull off the win tonight that would do wonders for his confidence which would be great as we roll down the stretch. On the other hand, we’ve gotta get Rittich rolling as he’ll likely be the guy come playoff time.

I have a bad feeling about Smith starting today... sure hope I’m wrong.

Not sure sitting Rittich for this long will end up being a good idea

The Isles goalie stats are indicative of Barry Trotz.
If you want to cheer for a Jennings winning tandem, we should trade Peters for Trotz.
Greiss is not that good, and with the exception of Smith, I wouldn't trade any of the other pieces for Greiss one for one, let alone as a package.

Hopefully Smith can once again not let in backbreaking goals. I suppose starting him again is worth the risk if he can maintain this level of play for the rest of the season. Therefore at least there's more confidence in the net tadem for the rest of the season.

Probably, but also the system that Trotz employs. Scoring is down across all their forwards. He's gotten the whole team to sacrifice their personal stats for team defense.
When the whole team plays defense, it's a lot easier to play goal.

This would be like Don Edwards in the 80s. Great behind Buffalo system, and a nervous breakdown manning the Flame net!

Wondering if Smith getting the start is a way to see how he will do against a better team, and for management to decide if they need to get another goalie for the playoffs

Hope Smith continues to play well but I would have gone with Rittich tonight as well. Smith is feeling better about his game, get Rittich in there and get both goalies going into the stretch drive.

I would say head coaches bring a certain level of competency to team defensive play - Doug Weight was obviously in over his head and Trotz is not. This brought their goaltenders up from bottom-of-the-barrell last year to an expected level of protection.
But I would doubt Trotz is doing anything drastically systemically especially differently in NYI, from, say, Gulutzan in CGY, Hitchcock in EDM, or Julien in MYL, especially not 5v5 (PK, maybe).
I haven't seen anything overly flawed in Peters' systems and lately we haven't even been making risky pinches. We've had some defensive breakdowns often due to guys like Jankowski and Monahan simply being a step behind om coverage, but overall I would say our goaltenders' performance for the season on a whole is based on their ability to stop pucks as individuals.
If we had Korn and the Isle had Sigalet I highly doubt the Isle would be pacing for the Jennings.

NYI have good players and are playing a committed style that Trotz demands. This will be a great opportunity for Treliving to assess how CGY handles a prototypical playoff style system (tight defense).
I will be very interested to see which CGY players can raise their games for this marquee matchup.
I think CGY will have to show they can play a patient game and just manage the puck well but at the same time still be able to demonstrate their dynamic offensive game. CGY have to be themselves and by that I mean a skating, skilled team but most importantly a smart team - don't play the game the opponent wants you to play ie loose and just looking for goals.
It starts from the net out - don't give them anything and move the puck quickly and smartly. Big game for the leaders of the team here. Lead the way.

So I went hockey stat digging instead of being productive
Per 60 5v5
Islanders are 19th best in scoring chances against and 10th best in high danger. These are respectable numbers, but can't account for the Islanders' goalies SV% even if their skaters are being coached perfectly on details.
Calgary is 10th best in scoring chances against and 19th best in high danger. We are 14th in 5v5 SV% and 10th best in goals against.
Islanders are 1st in 5v5 SV% and 1st in 5v5 goals against.
Their goalies success IMO should not be attributed primarily to Barry Trotz. They're not the best defensive team in the league but they are getting the best goaltending in the league. Mitch Korn deserves the real Jack Adams.

Was looking forward to see Rittich in this game after Smith and and the Arizona game, but a great start from Smith tonight will be excellent news for the Flames.
Sets up for Rittich playing the Ducks and Sens too if Smith plays well enough today to get the rematch against the Isles after that.
Will be a great game to see our depth continue to produce, but the top guys need to get going again soon. Looking forward to this one! The Islanders look like a really fun team to watch. Barzal is a beast

Yeah don't want to turn this into a Sigalet bashing thread, but goalie coaches do matter, I agree with you on that.
Bobrovsky's success in Columbus coincided with Ian Clarke working with him. Since Clarke left for Vancouver, Bobrovsky's game has deteriorated and Markstrom has turned into a near elite goalie.
I think Trotz should get more credit then you give though. I don't think it's fair to even put Gulutzan in the same sentence as Trotz. Trotz is a very good coach, a very good defensive coach. All his teams have been stingy defensively.
