I can't agree with this. In the pre-cap era then maybe this would work, but now it feels like the seeding is so much less meaningful given parity. And I really don't think it would be good for the game for a team to finish dead last in the league and then fluke their way to a cup.
In soccer, I wonder how many times a team has won the FA cup while simultaneously getting demoted to a lower league?
Edit: Wigan!?
Wigan Athletic during the 2012-2013 Season.
Wigan beat Manchester City 1:0, scored in injury time to win the cup.
Three days later a 4–1 defeat to Arsenal got them relegated from the Premier League making them the first team to win the FA Cup and be relegated in the same season.

I rather not to win that Prez trophy but just getting home ice throughout in the West. Let them be realistic and stay hungry.

I hope the Flames don't care about the President's Trophy. It seems like whenever there's a race for it down the stretch, the team that ends up winning always bows out of the playoffs early, likely from peaking too soon. I'd rather the Flames not even care about the standings and just play like they have been, keep something in the tank for April

Agreed. I get people who say the only trophy that matters is the cup. And they are correct. But this truly is a special season. One that might not be replicated next season, and one that we haven't seen in 30 years. You better believe fans like me are going to savor every single moment, and will celebrate any kind of trophy win.
The cup is the ultimate goal. But it's important to recognize and celebrate the achievements on the way that got us there.

The Flames have had such little success I’ll take anything. A division title will make me happy, a President’s Trophy will make me very happy, and winning the Cup will be the greatest sporting fan moment of my life.

If it happens as a side effect if okaying well and getting to the playoffs in good shape then great. Nothing to strive for unless they are a point away in the last game maybe, just for pride.
Still too early to project. The Flames could easily cool off like they did last year after the CBA break before injuries caught up with them. As other posters have noted they haven’t played consistently well lately and are either lucky to be where they are or just really Fn good.

I could probably name the last 10 cup winners off the top of my head, I could maybe name one of the last presidents trophy winners.
But if they still won the presidents or conference champs, I'd still buy the hat.

Getting top in the west and home ice is most important. Sharks, Knights and Jets have very good records at home, but are average on the road. You want them playing more games in your barn than in theirs.

This is the only thing I really care about as the Flames also have a very good home record. Would rather not have to start a series in Winnipeg or San Jose.

I highly doubt they catch TB. Really, the lowest the Flames could realistically fall would be 3rd in Pacific but more than likely they will be 1st or 2nd seed in Pacific. 1st in the Western Conference would be good enough for me! President's trophy would be amazing but maybe a curse?
Edit: Last time the president's trophy winner went on to win the Stanley Cup in a full season was Detroit in 2007-08 (Chicago did it in the lockout season in 2012-13).
