It's not that Benn and Seguin's numbers are incredibly low or anything, it's that the level of contract and the performance and what your PAID to do isn't there. The New England Patriots have a slogan, "Do YOUR Job". I don't know if this is applying to them and I think the owners pissed, they wouldn't be unique but it's just public here.

If this was a regular person's career and your job was to get sales (goals, points) and when you made the pitch to your boss (GM, owner) this wouldn't cut it. Your being paid to be a top sales guy in your area, region, industry etc but in this case your the highest paid guy in the company and your delivery decent sales across the industry but getting beat out by a LOT of people. It is what it is and I think its right for the owners in sports to call out BS sometimes.
Regular people dont get this plastered all over the net and media when their boss isnt happy. Their friends and family are reading all this stuff right now too.

And this isn't even the owner doing it, but his CEO/representative.

I agree they need to address under-performance at any time they like, but there is a way to do it. This is not that. It's the other side of a player going to the media and demanding a trade which is just as bad an idea and just as damaging potentially.

This will either work well and the Stars become what he thinks they should be or it will backfire horrendously and lead to carnage.

Fascinating either way though!

They both have full NMC with massive contracts signed. I don’t really see how else you can motivate them if nothing has worked to this point.

It would be crazy if we had another Richards and Carternlkke situation and the Stars moved both out in trades.
$9.5M cap for Benn with 6 years left after this year. 29 years old
$9.85M cap got kicks in for Seguin next summer for 8 years 26 years old.

I could see a lot of pacific division teams trying to acquire those players. Canucks have cap space and seem further ahead in their rebuild than many thought. LA desperately needs someone like Seguin. Vegas, San Jose, Anaheim could all have interest. Edmonton wouldn’t be able to make the cap work and the Flames would also struggle to add a cap hit like that to the books but Seguin would be a great fit on the team.

Dallas could come out pretty good from all this if they trade both guys in their primes. Personally I'd be weary of Seguin as the article summed up his play pretty nicely. All finesse, but not a two way player. Benn I'm surprised to hear about.

Either way, you can guarantee every team will inquire about at least one of them, so much so that there would be no way to get a good deal from Dallas. One team will overpay if both are available. I could see a team like Montreal breaking their bank to get Benn specifically. Anyway, ultimately Dallas doesn't have a good enough team to win it all and these guy will likely take the brunt of the criticism this off-season when they inevitably don't win. This (whatever it was) was probably the last straw for the owner, though I can't see rich athletes who aren't fringe players as giving to f's about this. Tough situation to be in for the owner who rightfully expects more from them.

Doubt either would waive for Montreal with their contract structure. The difference in tax alone would be ~ 10 million USD. It’s not like they would be under less public scrutiny with that movie either.

Yeah, no chance of that. I think LV, SJ and VAN will be all over this. Potentially NYR and NYI too.

Gotta think this ends in a trade. Theres no way to repair a relationship between either player and the organization after they call them out in this fashion.

True.

Fleecing your sworn enemy feels good.

Could see Philly interested as well. Holmgren goes 6 to midnight for guys like Benn.

I forget - was Holmgren involved in the Carter/Richards thing in some capacity (coach or AGM)? If so, probably won't want to to touch this.

Front and center, GM at the time.

Didn't realize they had NTC. I could see Benn waiving it. MTL seems to be a good fit for a guy like him IMO. Plus you have to think it'd be a GM who doesn't mind making bold moves (right or wrong), so I think Bergevin fits that bill. I can't imagine SJ or NY overpays, though good fits for Benn. Vancouver would totally overpay, as would Edmonton. Point being, every team in the league would inquire, but most GM's would shy away from overpaying - certain GM's would and those are likely the GM's above.

Oh, LV for Seguin? A party boy in LV? Seems like something good for marketing purposes, but not so much for having a team focused on the sport.

It's a pipe-dream, but man, Tyler Seguin with Tkachuk would be criminal.

Or we could get Blake Comeau...

Not surprised, Benn has quite the rep in Victoria. Dude parties like it’s going out of style
