Good point. If the following 92 seconds of gameplay was playing for free and he sat in the box for 120 seconds following the chop, he had already served his punishment from both the officials and the league by the time he left the penalty box.

It’s too bad they can’t/won’t levy fines up to and including one game salary for the player.

It would strike a balance between a game suspension and these woeful fines.

That's like me getting fined $2.50. Or maybe even 25 cents.

Not as big a joke as paying Byfuglien $8M.

Pisses me off. He's pissed that Johnny turned him inside out so the big thug plays the only card he has on that play. Hope Johnny is okay.

May not be happy with the Dollar amount, or the penalty, but that means that likely Gaudreau is okay.

To be honest though, if you had to give an imaginary $2.50 Dink Tax every time you were a dink to someone, it’d make you think about it. Sure, it’s not huge, but it’d be annoying enough to probably stop most dink behaviour.

I still can't believe the ref didn't toss him...putting him in the box with 2:06 left was so dumb.

Buff needs anger management...not even kidding. Mark my words he will be involved in a major incident at some point. Every time he gets beat bad or hit he snaps and does something stupid.

Honestly, I think the minimum fine should be five figures. A guy making league minimum getting fined $2,500 is nothing let alone one making millions. I’d send out Hathaway next game and two hand Buff somewhere painful below the neck (don’t want to seriously hurt the guy or take a suspension). I’m sure the boys would happily chip in to cover the fine, hell I’m sure Johnny would be more than happy to cover it himself.

The slash that Byfulgian gave Gaudreau was a deliberate attempt to injure and should have been given a match penalty. League discipline is a joke!!

So if I'm making $8000 to do something for a business, and I can break the company rules by being a dink to other people when things don't go my way, and I'm only charged $2.50 to do dink things... I don't think it would effect me enough to "Stop and think about the severity of my actions".

That's chump change for Byfuglien.

I had a hard enough time justifying the Lucic fine for jumping that rookie back in October. But the more I thought about it, the kid did take a dangerous run at Lucic's teammate, so it's semi justified.

Nothing justified the two handed swing on a star player's arm. He got beat on a deke. That was it. That's hardly a hockey play and I'm honestly dissapointed in the NHL. I agree with the poster who said this sets a wrong message for kids coming up in the game.

A fine is the correct punishment. Just get him on record for misusing his stick. Next time it will cost the Jets their best defender for a game or two.

I can’t see how anyone would be upset. Yes, if the slash was in the face or broke the wrist the punishment would have been more severe - if the play was different and the outcome was different the punishment would have been different too - what’s the big deal with that?

Because doling punishment based on consequences is not how you solve anything.

He took a two-handed swing at a star player. This needs to be removed from the game and the way to do that is to punish the act - every time. Then it will stop.

But as it stands, the league will wait until an arm or wrist actually is broken before they do anything about it. In other words, no worries, unless you turn out to be the guy whose slash causes the break. Then you pay for all prior discretions.

Gio’s play on Koivu looked less dangerous and he got two games. The punishment system in the NHL would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.

When's the last time the maximum fine amount was changed in a CBA? $2,500 is pennies for these guys, it feels like an outdated number.

Whoever Lucic stalked has a freak accident and is injured for multiple games as Lucic sits on top of him and all of a sudden it is a suspension.
The list goes on and on of the result dictating the suspension which is BS.
Not sure if I am misreading your reply but Gio did get a 2 game suspension for that knee.

If it was Connor McDavid receiving the slash, chubby buff gets 4 months in Alcatraz.

$2.50 would mean you make $8,000 per year. At 25 cents that means you earn $800 per year. That's impressive.
