I don't see Monahan as the best option. Far too often he seems less engaged than many other guys on the ice.
Chucky might be too engaged though. lol
Someone like Bennett or Backlund is more the personality type I could see taking over, but none of us know what they are like with the rest of the team in the room.
Very hard to determine in my opinion. They all seem to be good options for different reasons.

I dunno about "agitators", per say, but I believe physical, lay-your-body-on-the-line guys like Jarome Iginla, Ryan Getzlaf, Zdeno Chara, Dustin Brown, Mark Messier, Doug Gilmour, Alex Ovechkin, and our own Giordano make some of the best captains. Even guys like Toews and Crosby play with such a high compete level that it's infectious. Yes, you have Joe Sakic type captains too. And yes, a letter doesn't make a leader. But I prefer if someone in this vein wears the C. I've always felt Sam Bennett is captain material for this reason. I would be pretty wary of putting the C on Monahan's Jersey because while he's talented, and I'm sure a great leader in the room, I'm not sure his on-ice play can spark a team the same way.

So in other words Monahan seeing he's a warrior that's continued to play in more than a few seasons with a broken body by the end of the season. Bennett maybe if he can continue to progress but I feel Monahan has been groomed from day one to be a future captain of this organization.

I vote Tkachuk. I’m sure Monahan’s a decent guy in the locker room but I don’t want to see a player who won’t fight or even jump in a scrum in aid of a teammate as our captain. He’s too passive to be the leader of this team.

I would personally do Backlund. He is everything we want and has embraced the Flames. U can see how much he hates Vancouver and Edmonton

Mark Messier, to an extent. He wasn't a pest, but he was dirty.
Dale Hunter was a captain in Washington.
Steve Ott in Buffalo.
The one I can't believe I missed.... Theoren Fleury was captain in Calgary for a couple of years!
|
I can't believe no one mentioned Matty's old man! Keith Tkachuk was one of only four players to ever score 50 goals and get 200 penalty minutes in a season (Brendan Shanahan, Kevin Stevens and Gary Roberts were the others). He was captain of the Jets/Coyotes from '93 (only 21 years old!) to 2001 (except for '95-'96 when he was stripped of the C for having held out and signing a ridiculously expensive offer sheet at the time). Almost 20 years later and he's still the Jets 1.0/Coyotes' franchise all-time PIM leader, hahaha!

Given that Gio has 3 more years on his contract and is still the engine of the team, I can't see anyone being close to taking the C from him. Once his contract is up it's worth looking at, Backlund will be too old to take the C, Mony will have one year left on his deal and Johnny may leave. I would put my money on Tkachuk if he signs an 8 year this summer. He will be 23, signed for 5 more years, probably the highest cap hit, and hold a Conn Smythe

Beginning of the Season I had:
1) Monahan
1b) Backlund
2) Tkachuk
But know I don't know. The media seems to be treating Tkachuk like an alternative captain and leader of the team when they do interviews.

Chris Chelios was as skilled, dirty and tough as they come when he was captain with the Blackhawks. A HOFer.

I can see Gio being a Flame until he retires, but that doesn't mean he'll be captain the whole time. Over the next couple years all the guys like Tkachuk, Monny, even Bennet could show after a couple (hopefully deep) playoff runs who the leader of the young core is and Gio retires with an A on his chest.
Kinda like Craig Conroy.

I think he is the best option to take over from Gio eventually.

Will Matthew Tkachuk be the Flames next captain?

For those of you who have supplied answers to Estrada’s question you will notice that they have one thing in common: they played in a bygone era. Even those who are still playing like Getzlaf and Brown are “throwback” players who are nearing the ends of their careers, and the game itself is significantly different today.
I still think it’s Monahan. He was the Flames first pick of the new core. He has been wearing a letter for a few years now. He is a centre. He captained his teams in Junior. And, importantly, Monahan is almost never in the penalty box. He will be a captain in the mould of Joe Sakic or Steve Yzerman, who quietly, confidently goes about his on-ice business, while leading his team in his physical and psychological commitment to the game, and to winning.
It takes all kinds of different players to lead and to win. Tkachuk is possibly the Flames most important player, but I continue to worry about how much the “C” on his jersey would threaten to nullify some aspects of his game that make him so valuable. (Remember, the game is MUCH different now than the days when K Tkachuk donned his letter.) The team doesn’t need to limit itself to just one “heart and soul.” This job can be undertaken by a few.

Rittich should be the next captain....
Who wouldn't go to bat for him?

Worked out so well when the Canucks made Lou captain.
It's actually not within the rules, technically.

This tactic whereby "best player = captain material" is dumb. The captain of the team needs to do a hell of a lot more than just score points. It was idiotic for the Oilers to inaugurate McDavid their captain at 18(?!) years old regardless of the fact that he has been their best player by a country mile from the day he was drafted. Not that I don't think Tkachuk is an excellent leader, my worry—as stated above—stems from how much wearing the "C" might affect some of the key components of his game; it could potentially actually reduce his effectiveness.
