My usual go to is yep. Then the small talk ends and gets less awkward for me.

depends. If you hate talking to the other parents I feel this would be super-effective.

I really can't stand small talk, it's such a chore.
I usually just jump straight to railing on Donald Trump.

I like to ask what their favorite small talk conversation topic is.

I really hate the "how's work?" thing that so many people go for. Like are people really interested in that kind of stuff? I'm not. I really don't give a crap.

I dunno, the one people usually use with me is "you are not supposed to be in this area, sir, can you go?".
I find the hardest thing is ending a conversation in a natural, flowing way. It always seems to be awkward silence and then walking away. It's kind of like, we talked about something and we have reached the end of the useful part of that conversation. Small talk seems kind of shallow, and so does anybody get anything meaningful out of it? I guess it's interesting as far as being able to relat the little story to my family when I get home. "Some stranger talked to me today and complained about the bus being late all the time".

It's a very Canadian thing to do. When I was in NZ and Aus, people didn't want to talk about work outside of work unless it was really important. Caught me off-guard at first but realized it makes a ton of sense. No one really cares. Go for a pint and talk about everything else, including weekend activities, sports and hobbies.

I hate talking about work when I'm not at work. My brother-in-law wants to ask me about work every single time I see him.
I never change my answer. "We're busy". He tries to draw more out of me, but I hate talking about work.
I hate it more when somebody I work with or deal with at work wants to talk shop outside of work hours. I'm off the clock, I don't want to mix pleasure and duty.

To me, small talk is to break awkward silence. But really, there is no such thing as awkward silence. Small talk is awkward. Silence is comfort.
