Even if you’re at 50% your insights are more useful than almost any other writers.
Even if you feel you aren’t at your best, you’re a better resource at this point than virtually any other media out there. Why? Because you have well in excess of 10,000 hrs of hockey coverage (the amount of time to create an “expert” in a subject), and the longevity on a specific topic to be able to put it in context. You remember the Flames in the 80’s. You had the same passion and investment then as you do now. That’s not something a paid scribe can call on, or that can be dug out of statistics since the game has evolved so much (and in so many different ways).
Before I get too deep in tis - I hope you get to feeling better! I’m sure it’s a tough slog at times, but you should know you have the support and well wishes of people who have never even met you (like me). If there is ever anything I can do, don’t hesitate to ask. I doubt I stand alone there.
Your contribution to Calgary cannot be understated. With 17 years of JUST this site (and more like 30 total right?) you have created a community that allows peoples of all walks of life, backgrounds and experience to come together and find argument, discussion, outpourings of joy, anger, and even (on rare occasions) common ground with one another. I don’t know what sort of recognition you’ve received thus far, but the fact that your community is virtual in no way diminishes the achievement you have created. This is the main world in which people now exist – and you’re the mayor.
I know, I’m sure you think it’s nothing to do with you, it’s the community, and the mods, and support of many others. To some extent that’s true.
But you’re the guy in charge. The captain of the good ship CP. You’ve steered it right thus far, and created the environment that has allowed it to flourish beyond just a fansite for a single team. It’s kept me up to date on Calgary, Canada, and Gear Grinders for the past decade and a half.
It’s appreciated. EVERYTHING you do is appreciated. So don’t ever feel down if now and again you need to take a bit of downtime.
You’ve certainly earned it.
