There is a reason we have Prout eating popcorn as the 7th D. No, he may not be good enough to be a top 6 D on a Contender but he can also sit in the press box 70 games a season and fill in for injury and you dont worry about him not developing. He also can play the tough guy role which does have some value.

I am still a little surprised they traded KulK as they could have sent him down and had a serviceable bottom pairing depth guy to call up if more injuries happen.

I'm going to go against the grain and say a night in the press box might be good for Janko. He really has impressed at all this season (including training camp) and this might motivate him. I have no doubt the low ice-time has affected him but he is not driving plays, and also seems to be lost a little. Bennett, on the other hand, has been skating, and hitting the body and perhaps deserves the promotion. I guess we'll wait and see.

My ideal forward lineup after the limited preseason viewing and first two games:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Neal
Bennett-Jankowski-Czarnik
Dube-Ryan-Frolik

Slow your horses ...

it's one game and even that it's a maybe. Not to mention a deeper team is significantly changing the definition of fourth line.

Before we get too excited, overall CF for the team was 65%. He was below team average

Looking at minutes the coach has given him, what you have there is a 3rd line centre (close to 2nd, even).

Jankowski has done nothing all preseason and in the first two games. I have been extremely disappointed in him thus far and quite frankly, he deserves a wake up call with a pressbox seat.

He coasted through the preseason while younger players like Dube, Mangiapane and Foo pushed. Janko honestly didn't deserve to make the team ahead of those 3 but he did because of his season last year. Even Ryan had a few good games in the preseason, which is why he has earned more icetime.

Janko hasn't done anything in the first two games to change that and deserves to sit.

Man, this is a deep team up front. I wonder if they're actually gonna play Välimäki with Andersson as a pair, seems like a big risk having two rookies playing together.

Including every preseason game (I know, preseason) janko really hasn't done anything to impress me much. I love the guy, so it's not like im looking for holes. He was one of our best players last year prior to the season (again, preseason I know) but he has been mostly invisible so far. He was like a man possessed last year and just haven't seen that from him this year yet.

Just hasn't really had much urgency in his game. It's early though, hoping he can turn it around and build on a solid rookie season.

With this kind of forward depth and young players pushing, guys like Janko and Bennett need to carve out their roles.

Press box time here and there makes sense if they're struggling like Janko. This year, it will be up to him if he is Joe Colborne or something much better which many of us have predicted.

I've never minded Hathaway in small doses making space for the skill guys. As long as a good game doesn't mean he's automatically in the lineup indefinitely. Because that's when he gets too comfortable.

Bennett and Neal on the same line is going to be nasty for teams to play against.

Well, except for be one of our best penalty killers and providing any level of threat on that 4th line. Hard to produce with 6-8 minutes of ice time. We'll see if he's in the pressbox or not come game time, but if he's sitting it confirms a concern about Peters.

Interesting.

I have been quite disappointed with Jankowski since day 1 of camp. He had about 1/10th of the energy and hunger as last year's camp. Looking way to comfortable. Hope this is a early kick in the pants ro wake up and earn your spot.

I thought Jankowski had a good game. He used his skill and reach to create some chances and played well without the puck as per usual. Not sure why he'd be taken out honestly.

I was annoyed at Gulutzan inability to try different things to find success.... Tgat doesn't appear to be a Peter's trait.

We've actually outshot the opponent 4-1 on the penalty kill with Jankowski on the ice. His 5v5 underlying numbers thus far and in very limited sample haven't been amazing (8th of 12 forwards in FFRel%, 10th in xGF%Rel) but both have been better than both Dube and Ryan, our expected 3 and 4 centers in the next game, even though he's had the toughest zone start ratio on the team (1st in DZS%).

Jankowski to my eyes looks better defensively than he did last year. The results aren't there yet, and it seems Peters is intent on reminding him (and Bennett to an extent) for being part of last year's bottom six. Shiny new toys don't seem to yet have that stigma. Even if we win, I don't believe scratching him will accomplish anything. He's not a perfect player, and I even feel that 2016-17 Bennett was a better actual center than 2017-18 Jankowski, but he's absolutely one of the ~ten or eleven best forwards on this team.

Yeah actually, I think you could be right about that as well. Though I think Andersson will look a little better out there, as Prout, at times, did look a little panicked (yeah, 7th dman and all).
