But these players have all played for the Flames for a few years now. Aren't you supposed to give letters to the free agents you just signed?

I didn't even know you could alternate between home and away. This should go a long way in maturing Tkachuk's game. Good call.

Not sure how they will alternate, but...
Tkachuk: Wears the 'A' for all the Kings games.
Backlund: Wears the 'A' for all the Canucks games.

I don't exactly what years but we have been doing this a few times in the last 10 years or so.

The Flames are making so many correct choices this offseason... Retro jerseys make their return, promote two kids in Valimaki and Dube to the big club after training camp, make Backlund and Tkachuk alternate captains... Almost too much at once

What's everyone think about the Leafs' alternates?

Makes me wonder if possibly Burke had anything to do with some of the questionable decisions of the past few years...

No one on the team more deserving, in my opinion. Neal would be a good choice too, but no way he deserves it over these two.

I approve. Hopefully Tkachuk doesn't feel he has to tone his game down.

Congrats to those two guys, great choices by our new coaching staff and I am sure a bit of some talking from the team.
I’m pumped to see Chucky this season, I think he is going to have a massive year. This sort of thing seems like it will elevate his game even more.
Backs was a no brainer!

I would have preferred to give it to Backlind full time and let Tkachuk have a few more years of not having that type of responsibility.
But all good choices.

I think Tkachuk has stepped forward and wants this role. It probably doesn't hurt having him invested in the team when that long term contract negotiations go on.

I definitely agree. He deserves it and will represent it well I’m sure. I just think you could keep him hungrier for it for a few more years. As an example, I think striving to be a recognized leader on this team is one of the things that made Backlund push himself to what he is now.

I have no idea of what goes on in the locker room but to me, it speaks well of Monahan that he was benched for partying or whatever happened after the Super Bowl that year and now is considered a team leader. Good for him.

Tkachuk next Captain of the Flames. I know conventional wisdom has been Monahan, and that’d be fine as well, but I think they’re getting Tkachuk ready for his ascension into super stardom and being the leader of this team. Got the attitude and the skills for it to be sure.

True leaders don’t need the recognition, that’s not what leading is about. The letter is about what’s recognising what’s already there. It’s not the achievement itself.
If giving Tkachuk a letter takes a bit of hunger away, then he’s not a leader. But I can tell you right now I don’t worry about that even a little bit.

If anything, this letter will give Tkachuk more drive than he already has. Great move in my opinion.
