I think the last two nights may be indicative of the team this year. High offence that comes from 2-3 lines regularly, can turn it on when needed. But a bit loosy goosey on the back end with no real shut down specialists. Hopefully team defence improves with more commitment from forwards to come back and support.

Smith will again play the biggest role in whether we shut an opponent down or not. I honestly dont know which backup is better.

That’s a whipping boy all right.

Getting ripped after scoring the GWG and playing well enough to earn a star

I have little faith in either backup. If I had to choose, Gillies has earned it this pre season. Still wouldn't shock me to see this position upgraded

Edit - Now that I think about it, Parsons has actually earned it

You could see the yips come right off him after he scored the goal. Made an excellent rush with Janko and Frolik near the end of the game that he hasn't even tried since way back when Jagr was on the team.

Yes, one great preseason game negates 3 years or mediocrity. Gillies easily with the inside track for the backup spot.

really?

Bennett scores a goal for the first time in his last 16 games and that equates to everything being just dandy?

The guy has been mediocre for 3 years.....going to take a LOT more than a goal in a preseason game against an AHL team to erase that.

Lazar worked pretty hard on the Phillips goal, I'll give him that. Not sure if it's enough though.

Apparently my sarcasm detector is broken when it comes to Bennett because I can’t tell who’s being sarcastic and who isn’t anymore.

I really like Austin Czarnik. That kind of effort for an empty net goal in the preseason says a lot about the guy’s compete level.

Anywhere to see highlights? I missed all the Flames goals except Johnny's two. I managed to see all the Shark goals though...

Nope. Looked like he calmly explained something to him and Johnny listened.

He was probably asking Gaudreau for his autograph after that goal.

Yup, 18 goals and 36 points at age 19 coming off shoulder reconstruction surgery are definitely mediocre.

I think Bennett's lack of progress in the two subsequent years had more to do with Gulutzan's system and player utilization than anything else.

I expect Bennett to pot 40 points this year. Not what you would hope for from a 4th overall, but the forward ranks are very crowded, and Bennett will be getting 3rd line minutes with limited PP time at best, so 40 points would be pretty good for the opportunities he will be given.
