Ads at the arena are so weird to me. They mostly are for products or services that I’d never pick based on an ad, especially just a logo or slogan displayed at a hockey arena. I can see a pizza ad - it puts it in my head for after the game. But car manufacturers? Lawyers? Banks? Does anyone really say “I need a lawyer for this business deal - oh yeah? Firm X had that ad in the Flames attack zone.”

No, people don't say that. But that is not what the ad is trying to accomplish either. It is about name recognition. When the time comes that you do need a vendor, people are more likely to chose (and trust) a name they are familiar with.

It's an awareness play. You see those lawyers on ads over and over, and suddenly the next time you want a lawyer you'll remember seeing that ad and you'll look them up and call them.

It's the same reason why ads are purchased on instagram, facebook, google etc., these all drive awareness of their brand.

The way works is you think, "Hey, I need a lawyer for this business deal". And then you think, oh yeah, I saw "Sam the Solicitor's" ad at the Saddledome, maybe if I use them and casually mention my Flames fandom during the deal they will hook me up with free tickets! And more often than not, they do.

If you look at the section to the right of the Flames' bench, two of the stanchions look red. I wonder if they're testing out installing LED lights in the stanchions like they did in Vancouver a few years ago?

But actually, does seeing billboards and company names slapped on things we actually enjoy ever motivate people to go use those services or buy their products? It usually repels me from ever going to those places if anything. The only exception being alcohol, but probably cause it actually isn't out of place to show up at a hockey game.

I'm genuinely surprised so many are questioning whether name recognition through advertising is actually a thing.

Yes, name recognition through advertising is actually a thing. But it's nowhere near as big as advertising agencies would have you believe. Like most people with a product to sell, they exaggerate its effectiveness. The only thing an advertising agency absolutely must sell to stay in business is – advertising. Selling their clients' products is strictly optional.

There's a reason why so many traditional media companies are circling the drain. They depended on ‘name recognition’ (or ‘lifestyle’) advertising, which ad agencies knew how to sell, but which produces no tangible evidence of its own success or failure. Suddenly along came Internet ads, where you can instantly tell how many people saw the ad, how many clicked through, and how many ended up purchasing the product that session. Advertisers learned quite a lot about what kinds of ads work and what kinds don't; and it did not match up well with what the old media were good at.

I used Pete the Plumber because of their ads at the Dome and on the Fan.

What you have here, my friend, is a Scause. A very good Scause, so pause for applause. You’ve found a good reason, this hockey season, to accuse your team’s management of fandom treason. Share it and wear it, display it for all, on your wrist you’ll wear this, to show you’ve got gall.

We all get the same amount of ice. The rich get it in the summer. The poor get it in the winter - Bat Masterson

My brother-in-law is a member of the executive team at Minestar and they’re pretty excited about partnering with the Flames, it’s something they’ve worked hard for.

Just to be clear, it wasn't a shot at Minestar Steve. I was referencing the back and forth about advertising from the last page.
