Just the thread title alone is enough to laugh you head off. 9million per the dude and his agent have lost their minds.
Makes you wonder if this is some NHLPA stunt to drive up salaries across the NHL.
If he is awarded that the result will be pushing closer to another future lockout. 9m per for a 20g 60pt guy stop the insanity.

Ottawa’s $5M is more ridiculous than Stone’s $9M.

Is there any way he could be traded a s sign a long term deal?
I guess they can sign anything before the ruling. What about a sign and trade? What could the Flames offer? Bennett/Janko, Frolik? Backlund? Prospects? Picks? what would be realistic?

I’m pretty sure this has already been explained in this thread but, that’s not what his actual ask would be in standard contract negotiations.
The arbitration system in the NHL is broken. The player ask is always high and the team ask is always low. The arbitrator almost always rules somewhere right in the middle.
So 7 million for Stone is not crazy. Led the league in takeaways and is probably one of the best defensive wingers in the league. Also 60 point guy? He just put up 62 in 58 games on a terrible team. Calling him a 60 point player isn’t accurate .

Individual salaries have zero impact on the total salaries paid by the NHL. When individuals get huge contracts, all it means is less money for the lower players on the totem pole.
Total NHL salaries = HRR/2. Period. (escrow is the mechanism that makes this happen)

Normally I wouldn't expect this, but given how Ottawa is a "budget" team, is there a chance they just walk away from the arbitration award?

I'd sign him to a long term 7.5MM deal easy.

It will be high enough that they can, but I'd think there would be enough interest in him that they'd at least keep him and try to get something back in a trade.
Heck, Stone for Frolik and Brouwer would get them two players for the price of one. Win-win for both teams.
Their best bet is probably to hang onto him and try to be good enough that Colorado doesn't get too high of a pick, then move him as a rental at the deadline.

Yes they can, since the arbitration award will be over the ~4 million that is the cutoff to walk away.
It would incredibly stupid and I'd curse Brad for signing Neal if this actually happened though. Stone would have been a perfect add

He was top 10 in scoring when injured and on pace for 88 pts, His agent is probably using Driasuckle's deal of $8.5m for 77 pts on a smaller salary cap.
Stone is going to get paid because he is really really good.

Who'd be more expensive than what Neal would have cost and leave even less room for Hanifin
Also who says he would even sign here.... if it would be a reasonable contract... or ....
It's stupid to hate or curse a guy for something completely unpredictable and with outcomes that you have no idea how it would be IF that first thing happened a month after the first said decision.
Or maybe Brad shouldn't do anything ever because a month after whatever decision is made, something else may become a possibility!

The Sens are a basket case but I cannot see then letting Stone walk. You only see teams walk when the player is awarded a surprisingly high contract which kills their trade value. If Stone comes in around $7M as expected he will still have huge trade interest.

I think he is easily worth $7 million per year. He isn't just a points player, but he can work the boards and has a high hockey IQ in general.

Average salary on a cap team is around 3.45 million. The Sens offer means they think he is about 44 percent better than an average player. This for a guy whose PPG puts him at a 70 point pace per year over his 4 full seasons in the league. 5 million is laughable, what GM thinks that a guy whose PPG puts him at a 70 point pace and is an excellent defensive player is worth that small amount.

It's how these arb cases go now. Player goes in high, team goes in low and voila - we have ourselves a contract somewhere in the middle. I will admit Ottawa seems lower then player is high so I'll go with 7.25. Gets him to UFA and out of Ottawa.
On a side note, anyone know - was it player or team that elected for arbitration here?

I'm pretty sure all the arbitration cases this year were player-elected.
