I feel like I read in an article that their stock price lost like 3 months of gains. So while not a great thing, I don't think it is some giant shift in the companies future. People have been willing to turn a blind eye to the problems they've had due to their ability to keep growing and generating profit. This slow down in growth (that they noted may be the new normal) will certainly take the wind out of their sails, but I doubt there is much big picture change to come because of it.

Ha! I find this funny because I logged in for the first time this year for my annual ritual of thanking people for wishing me a happy birthday on Facebook that I dont check and the stock subsequently plummeted.

Sorry Mark....my bad. Get used to the annual July disaster.

That being said, this looks like more of a correction of speculation than a random catastrophe.

That the people who chose to use these tools was the Trump campaign isn’t really the fault of Facebook.

Facebook does not have an obligation to do anything beyond what was require by law. Remember that every user knowingly or not agreed to this process. I think blaming Facebook for people’s careless treatment of both the information they receive from Facebook and the personal information they give Facebook is the problem.

People’s media literacy was the cause not the actions of Cambridge, the Russians and Facebook.
Don't get me started on the Russians haha. Russian troll farms are an actual thing. That's been proven on Facebook/Twitter/Reddit. They are the ones that started spewing the false news and all the pizza-gates that went with it. They're also still alive and well on all three platforms (and more).

The general public is not well informed on media privacy. Agreed on that. But instead of trying to educate the masses, the Republicans pounced on the data (however unethical it was) and used it/twisted it to their advantage.

Remember, this whole scandal started with a whistle blower from Cambridge itself. Who the hell knew this was going on before that? Did you?

Majority of people are media illiterate. Instead blaming the people themselves, shouldn't we be blaming those who want to keep them illiterate and use peoples' ignorance to their advantage?

Maybe this is part of the evolution of man where we realize that nobody cares about the scrumptious meal you had last night, or your babies first poop, or that your son in an honor student at Felcher Elementary School.

Maybe people flocking away from Facebook or Twitter is a good thing.

Your theory is that people will stop being self-absorbed?

It is good, but I care WAY more about those things than (opposite ends of the spectrum) political nonsense. The bonus is I'm down to 23 Facebook friends now.

I think its just financial people realizing they were unrealistic about the value of Facebook and expected it to continue to grow exponentially forever. It's not like the company is losing money or users. It just isn't growing as fast as it used to.

The company is still worth half a trillion dollars. I think many are over-reacting. Also, don't forget, their biggest potential cash cow going forward is Instagram. I would argue from a vanity standpoint, Instagram is the worse than Facebook.

Did I know that blatently false information was being fed to my Facebook feed.
Yes
DId I know that Facebook was collecting private data to sell to advertisers to microtarget advertising
Yes
What did you think Facebook was doing with the data that was collected?

I agree we should blame the people who want to keep them illiterate and use them to their advantage. These people were the Republican and Trump Campaigns. You don’t blame the scientist who invented nuclear bombs.

I actually hand-wrote and mailed a letter to a friend yesterday. It made me realize how much more it forces you to think about everything you are saying and the language you use when something can't be edited, deleted or amended after it is sent (or even while writing, unless you want stuff crossed out everywhere).

For founder Mark Zuckerberg, the loss came to almost $16 billion, according to Forbes, which tracks billionaire wealth in real time. That dropped him from fourth to sixth on the list of richest people in the world.
I think that this is what gets me about this whole thing. 16 BILLION bucks...I can't comprehend that amount of money. And he just lost it...and 'all' it did was drop him from 4th to 6th. The uber-rich truly do have mind-boggling sums of money.

He "lost" it, but he also never really "had" it. It's all potential net worth.
