I think Winnipeg would choose to sell lower to help out an eastern team before they ever consider helping out a division foe. I doubt Tre was even in on a discussion about this trade; of course he would have accepted it which is why it was never offered to the Flames in the first place.

Decent move for the Habs. I like Armia and think he can expand his role on the habs.
Mason is a headcase and will only ever be suitable as a backup. He just cannot be the man.
Good move for the Jet as well, both very expendable pieces and they needed the cap space.

CLB got Bob for Mason once upon a time.
Ouch.

i know that there is a learning curve for young goalies but it is a big risk for Tre. You could argue that next to Coaching, the goalie situation Is what killed them last year.
Seems odd to not address it or even have a contingency in place.

Rittich and Gillies were rookies. If you don’t play them they’ll never develop. We’re trying to develop one of them into a starter.
If Smith goes down at some point then obviously you probably have to trade for a goalie. But putting in some stopgap option before then just handicaps the nhl development of one of Rittich/Gillies.

Return seems a little light for Mason's $4 million salary. I don't know if Armia is anything special.

He's a decent 3rd liner. Can put up 30 points and is only 25

I like Armia but just not enough spaces for him on the roster

Yeah but the Jets were in a position where they needed to unload Mason. It seems the Habs had more leverage than simply accepting a 3rd liner for that contract as there's only a small pool of teams able or willing to eat that contract.

Mason's contract was only for one year at 4.1. Could be much worse in the scheme of things. They weren't gonna get much more than what they got.

In what world is Mason solving the goaltending issue?

I thought that Las Vegas would have slowed down valuing players based on past point totals on different teams and different systems.
Armia in a second line role is going to be a very good player and might surprise some people. If patches moves, Armia could have a pretty juicy role there.

I was watching a different season I guess. First of all, without Smith playing insane in the first half, we would have been exposed much sooner and out of contetion before christmass. Second, if you place goaltending as a bigger issue then our PP for example, secondary scoring, impact from Brouwer, mental weakness facing adversities and effort in front of the home crowd, you are missing a lot. Goaltending became an issue after the allstar game, along with almost everything else.

Goaltending was an issue long before the ASG. While Smith was fantastic on the road his play at the Saddledome was poor all season. It was such a bizarre split.

Every Habs trade feels so disconnected. There is not a worse GM in the league than Marc Bergevin. Whatever your thoughts on Treliving, that guy has a strategy and works to acquire players that fit that strategy.
Bergevin makes moves to make them. There is no plan. Throw enough spaghetti on the wall and hope Carey Price is healthy.

Maybe not having a plan is a plan in itself? Therefore he has a plan.
