Well that explains the funny looks I got when I said I couldn't find any roses and gave her carnations.

Jokes aside, this is actually pretty awful news for sex workers in terms of safety and security. But hey, why let little things like health and safety get in the way of good ol' fashioned social conservatism?

I actually really agree with this. By taking away a public place for them to basically silicate, we're basically going to be driving them out onto the streets or worse again.

But how do you keep a site up and running when you charged the guys who financed and operated it with a whole laundry (pun intended) list of crimes?

I understand the concern and I understand that a large part of the community was trying to use it for safe solicitation. But that wasn't the extent of the entire operation and I'm reasonably sure they knew this and were willfully profiting off of it.

Bad news for them for sure but you can't pick and choose who you investigate for breaking the law. These guys have been money laundering and up to other unsavory stuff for a while.

Yeah, I should have specified a bit better that I was more talking about the sex-trafficking law that came into effect a couple of months ago. It's incredibly bad news for the safety of sex-workers and does essentially nothing to curb prostitution.

Rube, do you think Backpage actually did well at harm reduction for sex trade workers? Because with all the unchecked underage girls on there, I'm not so sure I agree. I think Edmonton with their licensed massage parlours (elsewhere too I'm sure) is a better example of harm reduction.

Canada's laws criminialize all purchasing of prostitution. Is Edmonton like Vancouver where their police are simply not enforcing it?

I don't think it was ideal and there was most likely quite a bit of trafficking on there but it's still much better and safer for the girls than street work from what I understand.

Adult massage parlours are licensed in Edmonton, and while technically illegal for men to buy sex there, those places have greatly reduced violence and harm directed towards the women. The police routinely inspect them for safety, but prefer those places to the street level sex trade stuff. I always wondered why they were allowed to operate legally, but when you look at it from a harm reduction viewpoint it makes total sense.

The girls that advertise there will simply find another site or platform like Twitter to advertise their services on.

back in the old days telephone boxes would have adverts for 'chairs re caned' or French Lessons' I have no doubt an enterprising worker can find some way around it
