Ya I don't get it for the hawks. Trading young/cheap talent that can play, for futures, seems weird. If the intention is to compete asap at least trade for guys who help immediately...

I don't get it, are the Blackhawks or Preds the team getting Ejdsell? I thought he was previously Predators property?

Hawks get him from the Preds. The Hawks were in on him as an undrafted UFA, but the Preds won out.

I like Hartman and wanted him as well, but for that price, Chicago did the right thing here.
Also, Chicago is fantastic at drafting. It wouldn't surprise me if they draft someone who ends up becoming a much bigger piece for them down the road.

This feels expensive. I get he's younger and can easily be re-signed but the cost is similar to what was paid for Statsny and Brassard.

That's a ridiculous return for Ryan Hartman.

Q's doghouse a couple times this year...he got under 5 minutes the other night after taking a bonehead penalty
Anyways, Duclair slotted into the top 6 in his place. Saad. Debrincat, Kane, Duclair...your top 6 wingers.

Who cares where he was drafted? He is what he is now, and that is what should determine his value. To me, that is a pretty high price to pay for him. But the Preds are in full go-for-it mode, so I don't blame them.

Hartman was not considered a long term piece by the Hawks, so they cut bait on him while he still had good value.
Getting a first round pick, along with a prospect who appears NHL ready next year, is an exceptional return for a RFA, who'll likely be getting a contract next year that is 2x+ as much as his current deal.

LeBrun says the Flames were interested in Hartman (as they should have been) but the Predators were the only team to offer a 1st in the package.

I'm glad the Flames looked into Hartman, because he's exactly what this team needs. But the fact they did suggests they don't see Bennett a piece of the puzzle long-term. Wouldn't be surprised if he's dealt at the draft.

Hartman deserved a 1st in return IMO. Glad the Flames we're in on him. Hes just going to be better than E.Kane over the list ng haul. So jealous of the preds.

Why does looking into acquiring Hartman mean Bennett doesn't have a future with the team?

With Backlund locked up and Jankowski centering the third line, it's looking the Bennett will be a winger. Hartman is pretty much what we hope Bennett turns into at this point, in style and position. And the Flames tried to go out and get him.
I just see some hints that Bennett isn't in the long term plans. And frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if his camp asks for a trade in the offseason.

Hartman shoots right, plays RW.
Bennett-Jankowski-Hartman.

Some GMs do look at where a player was drafted. Looking at Lazar's stats in Ottawa last year, there is no way he should've been traded for a 2nd round pick. But because he was a first rounder just four years earlier, the Sens were able to get a 2nd rounder for him.

Hartman will likely be a competent 3rd liner who gets you 12-15 goals a year at his peak.
Kane’s ceiling is just so much higher. The only reason Kane’s trade value was lower was due to his pending UFA.

Considering that he got 19 last year, I suspect ‘12-15 goals a year at his peak’ may be a slight underestimate.
