I remember when Dave Rutherford on QR77 was having call-in shows about this. Some of the stories were horrendous. One 18-year old, just entering the market and still under parents insurance was being charged over $10,000 for the PLPD alone.

Don't know whether to believe it or not, but I'm sure there's some companies out there that are gouging that much or just not willing to give any 18 year old insurance.

Lots of brutal stories out there...

I can't imagine that to be true, I don't believe it....unless he had a brutal driving record. Although I guess they had no reason to lie

Edit: So I didn't sound like an ass

75% is too much, it just opens the door for the stupid young males who think they are race car drivers to get some big fast car and take out a family or kill themselves.

And this is coming from a young male. There is a reason we are charged more, we are a bigger risk.

In an ideal world it would be even until a ticket or accident and then your rates go up but things are not always perfect.
I'm just going off what my friend told me. I don't know the actual numbers involved, all I know is my insurance = less come october first, and thats a good thing.

When I first started driving at 18, I was paying $2160 (PLPD only) with AMA drivers Ed. I had an at-fault accident about 4 months later, and it jumped to $3300 (PLPD). A year after that it started to gradually decrease and now 4 years after the accident, I'm finally paying $2160 again.

What was odd, that without my Drivers Ed when I first started driving, my insurance would have been $3300 (note: same number as Drivers Ed with an accident). 4 years later (with no tickets on the abstract), I'm back paying what I had before the accident. Can't wait till I'm 25.

Yeah, my friends did drivers ed and still end up paying over $300 a month, which works out to more than $3600 a year. None of them have had tickets, and only one has been in an accident, but it wasn't his fault, someone came across 2 lanes and side swipped him. It's absolutely ludacris how much insurance is, especially how none of them have done anything wrong.

Be careful what you wish for. The marginal (if any) reductions you receive on your premiums will be more than given away in the riduculous new cap of $4,000.00 on "minor" injuries. I hope none of you ever get hurt.

The insurance problem is not with the drivers, it's the rediculous medical claims. That's why the costs are so high. If a cap on injury claims is what it takes, fine. In my accident, there was a couple in the other car. They both said they were fine, and were wearing seatbelts. However, the husband went back into the car to talk with his wife in private and they then decided to call an ambulance. She wanted to go to the hospital cause now she was hurt.

They tried suing my insurance company for $30,000 and after some investigating by my company, they found out the so called "whiplash injury" was from a previous accident they had a week before. Of which they also got injury money for. It's fakers/scamers like this that p*ss me off.

Why don't you all just get married? The day I got married is the day my insurance was cut in half!

Sure your insurance was cut in half, but I bet all your other expenses doubled at a minimum....

Yeah, getting married really helps. So does getting older.

I found TD Insurance to be the cheapest, when I looked last year. I think it might be only available to groups, as I was informed of it through a U of C alumni magazine.

Right now, I am 29, and so is my wife. We insure three cars, two of them are rated as sports cars and the other is a 99 Grand Am GT. No Collision coverage, but we do have Comprehensive on all three, and $2 million Liability. I have 1 ticket on my record, and my wife has none. We have no accident claims. The total cost is $2280 a year.

Insurace rates are out of control. When I was 20, I had NINE tickets on my record. They were spaced out just right so I didnt lose my license; I had one demerit left for a while. I was insuring a 1984 Camaro Z28, with PL/PD and Comprehensive. My cost was "only" $3200 a year. I shutter to think what that would cost someone now.

EDIT: Went to the Meloche Monnex website, and learned it IS TD Insurace. Caught me by suprise, because Meloche Monnex has not appeared on any documentation I have ever recieved from the insurance company - just the TD symbol everywhere.
