Wasn't too long ago that Gillies was the unofficially anointed ''goalie of the future''. This is a great chance for him to show he can take the next step at this level, similar to Rittich.

I think far too many fans have written Gillies off prematurely. To compare his one game this year where he came into the game in relief for Lack who had already allowed 4 goals to Detroit. If you remember Detroit was given a 5 on 3 power play and scored I believe two goals on Gillies at the end of a badly played game. In the end Gillies allowed 3 goals in 12 shots a very small sample size to compare stats to Rittich and Smith. In his one full game against LA last spring he allowed 1 goal against on 27 shots for the win.

I will be disappointed if Gillies is not given a start soon. This is the perfect opportunity for Treliving and Burke to see how good both Rittich and Gillies are. I truly hope Smith is only out for 4 or 5 games , but I believe in both Rittich and Gillies. I think we will stay in the hunt just fine with these two until Smith is ready to go. My biggest fear is that Treliving will go out and sign another retread like Lack or Edmontons recent signing of Montoya. We are better to stick with our home grown young guys. There is a reason most of these retreads are available.

Do you know the difference between a trade and a signing? Reminds me of when so many posters talked about "signing" Elliott. *barf*

goalies take a bit of time to figure it out, so i think extra patience is needed with goalies.

i don't think anyone is necessarily 'giving up' on Gillies...the nature of trade speculation is spit-balling prospects or areas of organizational depth that might make a compelling package.

reality is that trade deadline day is that it tends to be a bit of a bust, with many deals being made before that day and more often than not, no major trades.

Sorry to hurt your feelings. I think you are correct the Montoya acquisition was a minor trade. I don't follow the Oilers closely and don't at all like the team. I did, however, watch Montoya as the starting goalie against San Jose this week and with a decent goalie Edmonton should have one this game. Montoya certainly looked worse than games I have seen Broissoit play. I wish your Oiler's would start beating some the Pacific and Central division teams the Flames are battling with.

Gillies is still only 24 years old. Goalies often take a few more years, hard to gauge. Kipper was, what, 27 before he broke in?

Still think he could be moved, but it'll be because some organization sees potential.

Rittich has like 2 years more of development over Gillies. It shows as he is calmer in net. Gillies is probably more athletic, he has all the tools and isn't that far off. His nhl appearance in that Detroit blow out isn't a fair reflection of what he is.

Kipper you are totally correct it was a trade. Edmonton will forfeit a 4th round draft choice if Montoya plays 7 games. In my thoughts Your team still got ripped as it probably should have been just a waiver signing (definitely not worth a 4th round draft choice). Montreal probably tried to trade him before putting him on waivers and Chia got sucked in. Montoya's sv% this year with MTL was .863 and he had a 3.77 GAA. My point is why waste draft picks on retreads, and whether it was a trade or a waiver signing is insignificant.

Looking at the schedule, there is zero reason to play Smith any earlier than Monday against the Bruins even if he's fully recovered by the weekend. Unless of course Rittich is going full on Brossoit out there, which i don't see happening.

The team needs to use this time to evaluate an asset, give Smith much needed recovery time and gain confidence to play the backup goalie a lot more than they have been.

Barring a complete collapse on Rittich's part, the only time we will likely see Gillies is during the Arizona/Vegas B2B next week and thats only if Smith is on the shelf that long.

Brouwer on the IR.

The Flames could use a veteran RWer with a RH shot and grit. Maybe someone who's worn a letter on his jersey and has scored some big playoff goals. Speed isn't as important, but someone who can play on the PP.

Anyone come to mind?

I know he's too old and past his prime, but I'd still love to see #12 back in a Flames jersey.

Spoiler!

Gillies has impressed at the NHL level in the whopping 1 game he started.

1-0-0
Save Percentage: 0.964
GAA: 1.00

He played 34:53 in relief earlier this year, and didn't have the strongest game - but hey, even Rittich the Almighty has a loss coming on in relief this year.

I want to see Gillies in a game while he's up. Maybe the Florida game?

That would be nice, but if Smith is truly only day to day and possibly missing only two games, then Rittich should get both of those games. If Smith was long term, then I think Gillies would have seen some time. I doubt he sees any time if Rittich performs as we expect/hope.
