Maple would be the best as mentioned. Also heavy as hell. Walnut would look the best.

Oak is a bit of a more budget friendly hardwood, if you're on a pretty strict budget.

Nope...would never do this with a soft wood. I'm surprised they are even offering you that. I'm suspecting it is price motivated.

all quality furniture is made from particle or pressboard - forget about these other speices.

as an aside, are you getting the chairs made from the same wood as well?

Hoping for a matching bench.... we'll source chairs later.

Decide on the look you are going after. Are you wanting a lot flame/pattern or a more closed veneer? Decide that then explore not only the species but the cut of the veneer. There are flat cuts, quarter cuts, Rift cuts and you can even get into some cool composite woods. Take some time to research this before proceeding.

You might also want to check the type of maple. All the varieties are hardwoods (i.e. from deciduous trees), but there are fairly big differences in how wear resistant they are.

Eastern maple (sometimes called hard maple) is more expensive, but it's also tougher and more suitable for a table top. It's what butcher blocks tend to be made from. Softer maples (western bigleaf, silver, red, etc.) are cheaper and often have nicer figure, but in terms of hardness they're midway between something like pine or spruce as compared to hard maple.

The price difference isn't huge or anything, so presumably the quote is for hard maple, but I'd double check for sure.

I bought my custom table from here and we've been really happy with it. We get lots of complements when people come over and it's perfect for when we host big dinners.

We got a 6 foot'er with 2 x 1.5 foot removable extensions on each end. Its a 9 foot beast if we use both extensions.

He had us over into his shop to look at current work in progress before we decided and had all the colors and woods available for us to look at.

and as others have mentioned... no to spruce

I have never had one of these nicer tables - how exactly do you transport them? Some of those on the website don't look like they can be disassembled.

Ha. But they don’t look like they would even fit through a normal front door. Maybe they are lighter and less cumbersome than they look.

Unless of course you can get of hold of teak!

I have an 9 ft - convertible teak table that's at least 50 years old without a scratch on it(without a lack of trying).

And yes, I do realize nobody sells teak anymore but it never warps and lasts forever.

Mine is similar to this but a little thicker/heavier.

Spoiler!

I like walnut the best. Jatoba is nice and so is cherry. Maybe tigerwood if you can live with something that bold. None of those are inexpensive though.

I have table envy. You people eat like kings. I might as well just eat off the floor.
