You absolutely need youth and hunger in your lineup. It keeps everyone else honest. And youth and hunger is not necessarily a liability. I've been reading some analysis that young D are actually not any more prone to giveaways and turnovers than established D. It's just a full on NHL culture issue (again). NHL coaches are essentially the most conservative bioforms on the planet. Management has to force their hand to play unproven players.
100% agree. But to be fair, a lot of teams that do that have reliable core players where I don't feel we have had that luxury in the past.

New players by year:

2013: Johnny, Monny
2014: Ferland
2015: Bennett,
2016: Tkachuk,
2017: Janko, Kulak, Mangiapane, Hathaway

Not bad - over the past five years 9 of the flames forwards promoted to the team have been internally drafted and developed!

Other players:
Backlund - also internally drafted and developed
Frolik - UFA
Brouwer - UFA
Jagr/Versteeg - UFA

Get him in the game tonight. I don't buy into this "gotta get him up to speed" stuff when someone is recalled. It's his first NHL game in a long time and his first ever with the Flames. The guy is gonna be playing like his hair's on fire. Throw him right in there.

I'd prefer that the franchise devout its energies to proper development than another 1st or 2nd round playoff exit.
Prime Johnny, Mony, Brodie, Backlund and Hamilton and Gio still hanging on. Tkachuk a rising talent.

Missing the playoffs this year would be a disaster even if we had our 2018 1st and 2nd. We don't. Missing the dance this year would be so bad it would set the franchise rebuild back by years.

They don't even have a 2nd and 3rd in 2019.

Hope they didn't call him up to eat popcorn in lieu of Stajan. I suspect Stajans time is coming to an end. Or there's bigger fish in the pan frying.

Flames take too long to do these things. How long can you sit on something that's not working in the NHL and expect to be in the mix.

Set us back years? Is the 13th overall pick that important?

Missing is bad because of the perceived talent on the roster. But I think calling it a disaster is a bit of a stretch.

Plus he has no idea how to play our system which, at this point, seems like it would give him an advantage!

Why is this either/or? We should ALWAYS be focused on developing players and ALWAYS be focused on making the playoffs. There are contingencies (like when you know from the outset you are a lottery team or that you are making a legitimate push for the Cup), but neither are the case this year.

We have no first. There is zero upside in not making the playoffs.

Random question: With F. Hamilton being claimed, does D. Hamilton get a jersey that now simply says "Hamilton"?

I would assume so. Man, that carousel of names is strange because I believe he's worn one before.

YUP! It's Huska's job to make sure they are up to speed when they arrive here. He's 5 for 5 so far, some in limited viewings, for having call-ups ready, in my opinion. Janko, Anderson, Mangiapane, Ritich, and Hathaway have all looked good so far, and don't seem to be searching for their role or game with the big club.

I don't know him as well as most of our prospects. Anyone want to give a breakdown on what type of player he is?

If only one can be put in the pressbox, my preference is to see Stajan in the lineup and Brouwer eating popcorn.

Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
Glen Gulutzan doesn’t anticipate Marek Hrivik will play tonight but he will take warm-up as the team will have some game-time decisions.
