I agree, they are both amazing.

I like this layout for Howes stats in particular. Awe inspiring to look at.

Just saying.

975 regular season goals. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
Not if you include playoff goals

It doesn't look to me like he has enough gas to pass Howe's record this season. And fwiw - I agree that Howe's record of all time games played should be left alone. If Jagr wants to nudge up right behind him, that's fine with me. But the powers that be should remind Jagr that there are certain records that are not meant to be broken.

That's ridiculous. Records are meant to be broken. That's the human condition. We improve and set new standards.

Perhaps - but do you think Mark Messier just couldn't get himself to play another 12 games and thus fell just short of Howe's mark??? Likewise Ron Francis? Hardly - both of them had too much respect for Howe to take his record away.

Both Francis and Messier retired after the end of a full NHL season. To get the opportunity to play another 12 games, they would have to sign up for another full NHL season.

I’m sure they could have played that amount of games. But when you know you’ve lost a step and it’s time, not sure if you are willing to go a full season for a record. I promise each of them, no matter how much respect they have for the man, would have loved to take that record. Messier sure didn’t hesitate to pass Gordie’s points record in his final year.

What points record? Pretty sure Gretzky took care of that one.

Messier would have had ample opportunities to sign with a team - play his 12 games - and then retire. Nobody has to play a full season on an NHL contract.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one. I'm sure Jagr has already been told it is not in his destiny to break Gordie's games played record - so it won't happen.

I can pretty much guarantee that thought never crossed either of their minds. You honestly think that's why they retired?

"Okay we want you another year, here's $8mil"
"No thanks, too much respect for Gordie"

Maybe Howe offered then $8,000,001 to not play.

Yep, the NHL has told the 2nd all time leading scorer that he can't break a record from the 4th all time leading scorer. If the Flames are pushing for the playoffs, and Jagr gets near the record, "Nope, sorry Jags, you can't help this team. Press box for you."

And what NHL team would want a player, no matter how great he is, to only want to play 12 games of a season, just so he can pass a record? That would be a major distraction. It's all about full commitment to a team in the NHL.

If seen enough of "Jags" to know his presence or not will not be a deciding factor on whether this team makes the playoffs.

Hmmm. the same NHL team that is willing to sign a player solely to say he retires as a Flame ... would be the same team that would agree to a 12 game stint.

I have always been a huge Howe fan, so again, my comments should be taken with huge helpings of salt. But breaking any record in a year where you’re sitting at one goal is a little anti climactic. If he does break the record, I hope his on ice play picks up. Even Lanny went on a tear to hit 500, as he had a several game goal streak IIRC.

Odd that Gulutzan said there would be an update on Jagr tomorrow. And the commentary about it being ominous.

I hope the Flames aren’t planning on cutting him loose. Obviously he has been battling some nagging issue, likely a groin. Obviously missing training camp hurt him for starters. Both times Gully bag skated the team, it was aggravated and he missed some games.

I thought that earlier this season he was creating a few good opportunities a game, where he set guys up who could not finish. You saw him alluding to that in one of the Czech articles - that if they converted on some of these plays, then there would be less questions.

I would like to see him at 100 percent, and hope that is the direction this is going, rather than throwing in the towel.

If Jagr is done, it's on his terms, not the Flames. Treliving and Conroy have noted how effective Jagr has been when he's been healthy the last 2-3 seasons.

I'd be willing to bet my entire savings account that neither of those players took Howe's record into account when they retired.

I hope they are just shutting him down for a bit...I still think he can contribute at some point. Worried the -44 new years eve and fire alarm incident scared him off lol
