What center would they have wanted from the Flames, it wouldn't have been Backlund, Henrique has another year to go on his contract whereas Backs is a free agent at the end of the year.
This trade was all about Center depth for the Ducks. I mean Blandisi isn't much but you can see the pattern of the trade, they wanted a top 6 center now, and someone that could step into their lineup because of injury.
Calgary didn't have the pieces that Anaheim would want.

The Ducks are trying to salvage this season. They would not be trading with the teams they are in direct competition with.
It's an overreaction to Getzlaf and Kesler injury. According to latest new reports, they are both about a month away from returning. 15 games and Henrique goes from top line center to third line center or wing. Yet 15 more games at their pace might be enough to drop them out of the playoff picture.

oh good I found the Fire Gulutzan thread. was just confused because of the title about some trade involving two non-Flames teams. guess I just got lucky this morning, because I can't find anything about the coaching discussion in any of the other 7 active Flames threads regarding their performance so far.

Adam Henrique started out as a great promising 2-way center, but seems to have disappeared a bit.
Is he a Backlund type Center (2-way guy, who can pot 40-50 points, which puts him in the decent 2nd line C positioning)?
I'm curious if the ducks couldn't have got more for a Dman who's in his prime at 26 years old.
Or, maybe this is the league/market making it clear that the Hall/Larsson deal is actually laughable and no team would be able to use that as leverage/precedent when trying to dictate the return for a solid young Dman.

whoosh!

They can make a trade like this because they have RHD Montour already playing 20 minutes a game, +7 and on pace for 20 goals and 44 points.....as a 23 year old rookie.
Not to mention they have Welenski, Larsson and Petterson down in San Diego.
Yep. When you see how decimated the Ducks are with injuries and where they are in the standings, it really puts into perspective how terrible Gulutzan is.
Seems like a fair deal to me, slight win for the Devils IMO.

Came for Gulutzan is terrible comment in an unrelated trade thread. Left satisfied.

Great trade for the devils. Exactly the type of deal you wouldn't want the Oilers to make. If they were smart - they would have traded RNH for Vatanen +/- draft picks involved.
Luckily Chiarelli is not smart enough to have pulled that off.
What is going on with some of the posters talking about firing GG in a thread about a trade not even related to the team... it would be actually nice to be able to click on a non-team related thread and not be exposed to the same thing over and over again.

I wonder how much this has to do with the emergence of Brandon Montour and his ability to fulfil Vatanen's role, along with Fowler being back. At the same time, Montour missed the game last night, so I guess this would indicate that it's not anything too serious or you'd think they'd delay this trade a few games until they have a reasonably full blue line again.
Still, losing Theodore to Vegas and now Vatanen really depletes the depth of that defensive core.

Good deal for both teams. Anaheim one of the few teams that could trade a young defenceman of Vatanen's calibre and not miss a beat with younger players ready to step in. The Devils fill a desperate need for a reliable, puck-moving top-4 dman. Ray Shero is a smart guy. Really like what he's doing in Jersey.
