I'll pop by the library at some point and look it over. Sounds interesting.

I thought the same thing so I reserved a copy and found myself in 445th in line at the pubic library.

I think it's a purchase if I want to read it anytime soon.

Speak of the devil, a former USA politician and now radio pundit, Bill Bennett, quotes the theory above and gets strangled for it.

This guy is an idiot. He disagrees with the theory - fine. I don't think he got in trouble for discussing the theory - he got in trouble for the disgusting way he brought race into the issue and suggested genocide (I assume facetiously, but nonetheless stupid) as a pathway to reducing crime rates.

Well im not American, but I live here.

Never felt the need to arm myself against possible intruders, never felt any more threatened on the street than when I lived in Canada. (Mind you if i had a weapon when that damn cat scared the bejeezuz out of me....but i digress)

The similarities between urban Canada and urban USA, are far far more similar than different....though im sure thats shocks the crap out of the whole "Americans are stupid" crowd.
For the most the US is very safe, but there is always the a sense of unpredictability not too far around the corner. Ive lived here for almost 3 years now, but I still feel sh1t could go down any second sometimes...people here are just a little more extreme in a lot of ways i find.

I definitely dont get that sense in canadia. The most threatened i feel is when Im downtown late at night and all you see around are drunk homeless drifters.

But Table5, you live in NEW YORK CITY! Of course you have those perceptions!

I'm a real cynic and think the drop in crime is because people don't bother reporting it unless they can collect insurance or in the case of violence, it is the only option.
