$6M for a player with one good season under his belt? That's a gross overpayment. Also, where does Ehlers fit in with the Jets? I appreciate the Oilers screwed the 2nd contract, but you have to at least try to keep your salary structure in control. Ehlers now makes as much as Scheifele and more than Wheeler. I could see it if Ehlers was coming off a 3rd or 4th year of over 50 points, but one season and he's a $6M player? That's just insane.

Because you are getting a decent cap him over lots of years, its worth the risk.
Johnny signed for less years, so his cap seems low in comparison. You add some extra years to Johnny's contract, and the cap hit would jump up.
He's also put up a great year at a very young age. It bodes very well for the future. Johnny is very close to his prime years already.

His first 2 seasons compare favorably with Monahan's
Monahan 156 games 53 goals 96 pts. Ehlers 154 goals 40 goals 102 pts. Monahan added an expected 65 pts season and got a 6.375 x 7
with 2 years of cap increases Ehlers deal seems to be pretty much bargain basement for a top-4 forward. If Tkachuk were to get 60 pts this season I would imagine the Flames would jump at the chance to sign him to the same deal.

Yeah, now that some comparisons are tossed out there, it isn't as bad. The Oilers really have screwed the league over and everyone else has to live with their stupidity.
Great deal. Ehlers is freaking amazing. Dude has all the skill, and if he puts it together, he should be a PPG player. I still don't think I've ever seen anyone else do this.

All true, but you conveniently ignore that Monahan's first two seasons were his draft +1 and +2, while Ehlers played another year of junior.
This is a really good contract. I am surprised that so many people think this is an overpayment.
I thought it was an overpayment when it was reported by the Score this morning as a 6 year deal st $7M per. Take a million off the AAV and add another year yes that is a fair and good contract for both sides
