Not if you buy good ones. I have a set of Eneloop AA and AAA batteries that are at least 10 years old and they're still working about as well as the day I bought them.

Rubbing your hands together furiously and placing them on the electronic item is probably a good substitute for dollar store batteries

If I had some of these AAAł batteries, I'd never have to change them ever again.

Man, must be a slow day for a lot of you.
Buy your rechargeable batteries online. I buy them from Amazon.

Triple A batteries don't work for stuff that vibrate. Or so I've been told.

Reminds me of AAAChicago Deep Dish pizza in the Yellow Pages.
Also, I only learned very recently that batteries can be disposed of in the garbage. Apparently the amount of hazardous materials in them is negligible compared to what was in them in the past.
I was always keeping dead ones in a Ziplock separately and would bring them in occasionally to Staples, Ikea, or other eco disposal places.

Can batteries go in my blue bin? I feel like I should know this.

Technically, batteries should still be recycled. "Negligible" multiplied by millions does actually add up.
London Drugs is a good option - they accept many household items, including almost all types of small batteries.

When the batteries die in the kids toys I usually say "well shoot, I guess it's broken!". And thus another annoying toy is silenced.

That happens at my house as well. Then my 3 year old takes it as a personal challenge to find the screwdriver and get the battery compartment open himself. Usually by trying to climb the bookcases.
