I'm sure everyone from the Pride event itself to their owners (The Flames) would be overjoyed to see significant participation from current players. Lack of participation would almost assuredly have to come from the players themselves.
That is odd.

Marching in an event isnt really a ton to ask for, but at the same time you'd have to imagine that the only real grounds for an employee to refuse such a request would be personal (or religious) beliefs.

Yeah, that's I guess what I was getting at - Religious/personal beliefs are likely the reason for no players going, which is disappointing with by far the largest roster of players in Calgary sports.

Kids need local heroes to step up and show support for things like this, at least one guy should just do it.

Or they just don't want to March in a parade.

Can't imagine any organization would force their employees to attend a pride parade. There's zero chance that would end well. If you want to go, great. If you don't, whatever. That's all it has to be.

Its a tough thing to understand. I get your point and hell, if it were me I probably wouldnt think twice other than the fact that I hate parades in general.

It would be interesting to get an answer. But at the same time, if they dont want to do it they shouldnt be forced to do it.

But this is all speculation now.

Oh, and my 'Gay Agenda' thing from a few posts ago was a total joke. In case anyone was wondering.

Whoops, sorry guys I realize now I may not have been clear on where my disappointment was directed. I would never want the teams themselves to force players who don't want to attend, to attend anyway.

My disappointment was in the players themselves, especially with a huge roster size, to not have one single player wanting to shows support for the community when almost every professional sports team in Canada has multiple, current representatives.

"Maybe they just don't want to March" is absolutely correct and precisely where my frustration lies.

Yeah it does seem odd. I mean you must know, given the CSE stance on community engagement that an offer went out to all players to join Cornish in the march. Just kind of sad they all took the option.

Perhaps they see some Hypocracy from the parade organizers wrt inclusivity and don't want to march because of it.

It happened last year as well.

The team has a few players with Calgary roots. I won't name them (not out to run them down), but the local angle makes a compelling argument. They would have friends, or possibly family in the LGBTQ community.

IMO of all the sports, Football seems to be the most overtly religious, so I imagine that might have something to do with it.

If that was why they were doing it then it would only be useful if they expressed that.

I may be wrong but i believe the Stampeders have their final walk through for Mondays game at 11 tomorrow. There will also be position meetings I would think which would explain anyone from the club not attending as they're working while the parade is taking place.

Going to have to agree with the rest. That seems unrealistic. Aside from the hypocracy angle having no bearing in reality and pretty stupid, let's say they did believe it. Unless football players are significantly more prone to feeling of hypocracy and standing against those feelings (true or not) it doesn't explain why they're the only high profile team in Calgary not represented.

There are 46 players on the Stampeders, they couldn't muster one? One player out of 46. The Flames have 4 out of 23. I don't believe that some fantasy about players taking a stand against a (misinformed) perception of hypocracy accounts for the vast difference between representation of all other sports teams and the Stampeders.

It's just sad that no players, especially those front and center in terms of community involvement, could bring themselves to represent the team in this venue.

I don' see why anyone should get shamed for not attending.

If you can make it great. If not, thanks anyway.

There is no obligation to be a social justice warrior written into a player's contract.

I think most would agree. No one is shaming. Just showing a little disappointment thats all. They do have a rep there and John Cornish is as good of a person as you can have as an ambassador.

Well, it's a business thing. Outreach to different demographics is good for business. The Stampeders stand to gain from a financial position by broadening their audience.

Right. Labour Day Classic. That might make sense. I did not think of that.

I would think (and hope) that's the reason. Seems a little rough to be critical of the players without knowing the clubs stance on being at McMahon the day before the game.
There are several ways players could contribute to this issue that would be more impactful than showing up at a parade, no? Anyone have an idea about whether Stamps players community participation extends to this area?

The Stamps did host a Pride Night at their game last Saturday: https://www.stampeders.com/calgarypride/

I have no idea what it involved.
