Wizards always need dry powder - and Tre has $4.5MM of it!
Working off your numbers, Treliving has about $1.35M to play with, assuming he signs Witherspoon for league minimum and Bennet for $2.5M. That's the buffer for the season. Treliving appears to be done unless he makes a deal to dump salary. Treliving's powder has been spent.
I've noticed he's actually stopped using that word now for about a year and maybe two. When he first came on board, he used it excessively when describing most things but in the last two seasons, it's pretty rare. I'm pretty sure it's 'cause he reads CP
I think Conroy probably started ribbing him for it.

According to a break news report from hockey scout Joshua Marshall , Iginla is presently in talks with none other than the Edmonton Oilers, a team he spent the better part of his NHL career having a bitter rivalry with.

Whose numbers? Unless the capfriendly website is lying to me the Flames currently have approx 7.165 million in cap space. So if you assume the high end of a Bennett contract to be 3 million, that leaves 4.165 to be split between a veteran and Wotherspoon. A lot more than 1.35.

I think it's pretty clear that Treliving's years in Phoenix helped harden him into the patient and calculated negotiator we see today. It appears that ample time is important for him to be effective though. Free agent signings have been hit and miss. Trades and re-signing though, wow, right up there with Yzerman.
2 outta 3 ain't bad haha

The number Gaudfather quoted was $4.5M.
If the capfriendly numbers are accurate, then that is substantially more to play with. The question is does the team spend it out of the gate, or sit on so they can bring in an asset at the deadline?
Wotherspoon's going to be on the farm, so his cap hit doesn't matter.
The cap hit of whatever defenseman assumes the number seven role matters. Assuming Wotherspoon takes league minimum, he could be that seventh defenseman.
There may be another reason that Treliving is being tight with the money. He could be holding back some space so players on higher entry level contracts can take those slots. It isn't a ton of money, but if a guy like Foo steps in and takes the spot from Hamilton, and Anderson takes a spot from Bartkowski, then you have about $750K in cap space eaten up. Probably needs to keep any eye on a reserve for injuries as well. A small chunk, but still needs to be accounted for. The capologist in the front office sure earns their keep.

The 4.5 was after the assumption of Bennett signed at 3.0, and Wotherspoon on the roster is a + but then the same salary for Bartkowski would be a minus so they break even.
4.5 is probably a slightly low estimate, as I see Bennett's camp pushing for a 2 year deal closer to 2 per season.
