I believe the issue in Ottawa was that CHL teams are limited in the number of both European and over-age players they can have on their rosters.

He would have been an over-age European and would have taken up two of those limited roster spots as a result.

Don't know how good the Kings' scouts are post-Lombardi firing but clearly they see something there. A 6'5" d-man who can skate and went on a goal scoring tear in the ECHL is gonna get attention.

With the Flames D depth, this is a insignificant loss. We're already set on D for the next 5 or more years. Plus we just drafted a solid D for the system that includes Fox, Anderson and Kylington.

We'll be fine without Falkovsky

That is true. But you'd think you'd find a junior team out there willing to bite the bullet for an NHL drafted guy if he was that good.

Flames cast off behemoths Kanzig and Falkovsky in the same week. Flames drafting faster, more nimble blue liners now. More than just a coincidence.

Falkovsky can actually skate. One of his strongest assets. Nothing like Kanzig

Falkovsky can skate though, and he can score.

I don't know why he wasn't given a bonafide contract offer after tearing up the E but I guess there was some parrallel Keegan Kanzig risk there of a guy just accepting the lowball offer.

Would suck if he's, like former unsigned Penguins late-rounder Jake Muzzin, actually a pretty good NHLer in the future.

Muzzin was a wildly different situation. He had a very serious back injury in junior and struggled for the two years post draft so the Penguins didn't sign him. He then got healthy and exploded in his last year of junior as an OA and got signed.

Didn't want to cheer against Falkovsky's development.

Guess the Falcon was neither the hero Calgary wanted nor needed.

Well that's weird. He was only drafted a year ago.

Hopefully he doesnt turn into anything now.

Not a huge loss but seems like poor asset management. Also... I have never heard of a 1 year elc, how the hell was his contract up after 1 year?

AHL/ECHL deal. The Flames never actually signed him. Stockton did.

Again he never signed a NHL contract with the Flames, he wasn't under an ELC.

He signed an AHL/ECHL deal with Stockton/Adirondack.

As getbak previously explained, technically non-college bound draft picks need to be given a yearly bonafide NHL offer for teams to retain their rights for the maximum allowed per the CBA. This is normally a formality and it is uncommon for a team not to extend a bonafide offer to their draft picks.

The Flames elected not to give him a bonafide offer after one year, therefore they lost his rights.

BT needs to explain this one. Are we that close to 50 contracts that we couldn't stay patient with him? January rookie of the month in ECHL.

Could have gotten picks for him at least in 1 or 2 years if he continued.to develop.

He did drop off a cliff in production near end of year.

I wonder if he has attitude issues?

The chances of him having enough value to get picks back are very slim

But why?

It doesn't make sense to not make a bonafide offer to him.

It does if the organization didn't believe he had a future.

Not now agreed. But liked his trajectory so far. I think we are missing part of the story. Not typical BT asset management.

35 contracts out of 50 as of today. Looks like we still had some spots once our remaining AHL and NHL contracts signed.
