So like he said, sign him for 1 year and see what happens. He would add physicality and is not afraid to go into the corners.
Hes a 35 year old LW. We dont need him and if hes the guy we're asking to go into the corners and do the gritty work then theres a bigger problem afoot.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
I agree with the one year part but this team does not need Scott Hartnell. In regards to giving him a contract I suppose that depends on if the team wants Versteeg back. There's only so many roster spots to go around and I would hope prospects like Jankoswki are going to get every opportunity to make the team.
Yeah it's the problem with having Stajan, Bouma, and Brouwer on the roster already.
Means you don't have the space to add a veteran on a 1 year contract.

Hartnell has played a lot of RW, but that's besides the point.
Begs the question, why didn't they buy him out before the expansion draft? Then they would have had an extra expansion slot and not had to provide 'protection' assets to Vegas?
Something I am missing here??
July 1st is round the corner, so that's one thing.
Another possibility is that it's not cap/performance related but something going on behind the scenes.
Yeah I would agree that cap space seems more likely.
Took a look at CapFriendly, and this made me chuckle.
Jackets have 2.5M tied up in two previous buyouts (Fedor Tyutin and Jared Boll). They freed up ~3.2M by buying out Hartnell. Meaning: if it's a pure cap move, this buyout might essentially be the result of two previous buyouts

They already had the trade in place for the expansion draft at the trade deadline according to McPhee. BJs really wanted to get everything protected early

I'd love to see a player like Williams or Marleau come in but at a very reasonable cost with little term. Seems unlikely to happen so you probably have to settle with an upgrade further down the lineup. It's not like the Flames were exactly an overly gritty bunch last year. Coming back with essentially the same forward group isn't going to cut it. If Hartnell comes at a low cost I don't see any negatives. It's not like your getting suckered into a stinky Troy brouwer type deal here and the Flames certainly need help on the wing.

The Blue Jackets paid $20M real dollars for 3 years of service (6.67/yr).
He waived is NMC to be traded from Philly to CBJ. On the one hand, it's interesting that he wouldn't waive again to go to a budget team that wouldn't mind his cap hit>$$. But perhaps there was simply no market for him.
On the other hand, he's now able to chase a cup and won't lose out on any money if he signs for 1.25 or more for 2 years. He'll do quite well from a tax perspective spreading his income over the next 4 years instead of 2 (assuming he retires in 1-3 years).
