Spoke with the owner of Full Circle, Josh, confirmed they just didn't get enough people through the door. He wasn't able to collect a dime himself in the past year, and stayed open as long as they could.

Previous to FCP was Benhurst pizza? I believe? Same fate. Just not a great location I think. Not nearly enough foot traffic, crappy parking. I hope someone else doesn't try opening a restaurant there.

So long Josh and Amelia, cool people. Hope to see them around with something else.

I think "Pizza and oyster bar" Would keep me away. Sounds like a terrible match.

It's a great pairing.

It's no "Pizza pops and fish sticks" like Oiler fans are used to, but we do our best down here.

I didn't want to toot my own horn without getting permission from Bingo/Photon first. I will be posting something official about it soon in the other forum, along with the requisite CP discount.

I'm proud to announce that my partners and myself have just opened The Beer Vault, Calgary's first beer-focused retail destination, a store that just does beer like Calgary hasn't seen before.

Our goal is to have the best cold selection of beer in Calgary with enormous diversity but also a focus on local breweries. We want to support Alberta-made beer with a huge selection of local product from our neighboring craft breweries.

If a local, crafty, artisan, intimate pizza place with great food and setting on 17th Ave doesn't succeed, I don't know what will

Now the food court is about to get even tastier—and a whole lot healthier and higher-end than a sugar bomb the size of a pizza.

That concept might sound weird to Americans, but elsewhere in the world, fancy food halls have long been culinary meccas. Mostly in Europe: Fauchon in Paris, Dallmayr in Munich, and the holiest of delicious temples, Peck in Milan. (Mario Carbone of Parm and Carbone introduced me to it, and seriously, it's the best place ever created.) In 2010, New York got its first taste of this when Mario Batali opened a U.S. branch of Eataly, the Italian Thunderdome. Five years later there are Eatalys all over the planet, and now everyone wants to open a single-cuisine department store/food court.

I'm starting to see versions of this in more and more of our big cities, from the thirty-plus-vendor Grand Central Market in downtown L.A. to Gotham West Market in New York City, with its amazingly diverse spread of tacos, ramen, and everything in between. Another prime N.Y.C. example is Hudson Eats at Brookfield Place, the bustling new food court in Lower Manhattan near my editor's office, where he worked on this column while eating an insanely good grilled cheese with butternut squash and sage brown butter from Little Muenster.
Another great example of this would be the Alder Street food truck pod in Portland, Or.

Yes of course, PM'd - don't want to hijack the thread. Restaurant closures suck and I know the pain of small business all too well. My heart goes out to Full Circle. I don't know the particulars of Janice Beaton but if she closed farm and then tried to open up Mabou claiming it was a separate company...it sounds like financial hardship or some creditor issue. Even if there was any shadiness, it's pretty tough out there.

I managed restaurants in Calgary for three years and happily fled that industry. No one should ever open a restaurant. Really, no one ever should - it's always a terrible idea. Sometimes it works out, but seriously, ask anyone who owns or has owned a restaurant: terrible idea.

All of us who love to eat out should be thankful to the dummies who make the bad decision to go into that thankless, demanding, unprofitable industry.

That's only minutes from my office. I will definitely drop in soon an support a fellow CP-er. And beer.

Will you be posting what beer is available at the growler bar?
