Holy moley! That's one hell of an interchange. I stared at that for a good 15 minutes & about the only thing that glaringly sucks is that all the traffic that wants to go onto McLeod Tr. from Glenmore EB gets squished into one lane at 5th street. Other than that, I'm impressed. Sure, we can point out that it's another overpass with lights, but in this case, I don't think there were options.
As for the skyrocketing price, I'm just glad they are doing this now. I grew up in the south, and this intersection, for as long as I can remember, is the worst. I can think of 10 interchanges in the last 20 years that were not as necessary as this one.

That was because of the paving on 12 ave which they finished. All the signs should be gone today

Just to let you know, once again today the "Left Lane Closed Ahead" signs are still up.
I know, I could call 311 and let them know. But I shouldn't have to.

Thanks Ken, I really need to brush up on my google skills.
That intersection is HUGE, no wonder it's going to take so long. Kinda wierd though, I see only one turning lane for EB traffic turniong on to 5th street. Even with 2 lanes at that intersection it was getting pretty backed up.

Yeppers... The one glaring weakness is that light there. One lane for 5st NB, one lane for mcleod trail traffic & one lane for the cars taht just came off of elbow & want to go glenmore EB. Thats going to be a mothertucker of a light.
The rest of it is very impressive though. I like that they didn't cris cross the WB glenmore traffic that wants to go elbow NB with the SB 5st traffic that wants to go glenmore WB. Nice little one lane overpass there. Too bad they don't do that with the light in the last paragraph. Hey, its already at 170 million? Whats another 20 mil?

The biggest help there will be that the traffic turning left onto 5th will have the right of way for the majority of the time. Cars wont be stuck there for several minutes waiting for traffic on Glenmore anymore.

The one that always makes me shake my head are the people that get onto Beddington Blvd. eastbound, get onto Deerfoot S., and then turn off onto 64 Ave. There's no need for them to get onto Deerfoot... Beddington has a number of previous exits that they could use to get onto 64th...
|
My greatest pet peeve with these people - as well as those going 16th to memorial or memorial to blackfoot - is that many of them decide they dont need to go much past 60 because they are exiting right away. Damned be the people behind them who have to try and merge with traffic going 50kph faster.

Myself, I don't mind people taking Deerfoot for 1 exit- sometimes that is the best way to go. But if you don't get up to the speed of traffic, get off the freeway. The same goes for people in the south. From McKenzie Towne they have a 1.5 km on ramp; nice and easy to get up to 100. Problem is, people still do 60 getting onto Deerfoot; trying to merge with traffic that has been doing 110 since they left Okotoks.
My other Deerfoot Pet Peave is the people who get on at Memorial, and do 90 in the fast lane because in 15km they will be turning left. At least that won't matter as much a month from now.

Tell me about it. Everyday I take N.B. deerfoor from 17ave to 16ave and have to try and merge at 50 because people dont feel the need to speed up when they are getting off at memorial.
Even better is when I have to merge left (at 50 naturally )while some guy doing 120 needs to get over into my lane

How about Deerfoot and douglas Dale blvd? Anyone live there? Doesn't it seem messed up more so now that the onramp at douglas dale blvd is open? It seems to take a lot longer to exit from the ramp than when they had lights there. Looks like the city didn't anticipate this problem. Now congestion is worse.
|
I have found the same thing. I take transit and in the mornings when the lights were there it would just be 1 light change and then we'd be on the Deerfoot and there were no problems getting to the Anderson exit. The last couple days have been a nightmare in the morning. Deerfoot has been a sea of lights heading north and this causes the on ramps to back up and it has taken probably 5-10 minutes the last 2 days before the bus could get on the highway, and even then a few minutes to get up the road to the Anderson exit.

Funny how now that we are seeing fewer lights on Deerfoot the traffic is worse. That's why in major cities in the States they have "meter" lights on the on ramps. It is red for 5 seconds, green for 2 seconds. No amber. That forces a gap between cars so that merging is possible.
The whole reason why all the overpasses all have lights on them is to try and prevent us from having to need these; as the larger cities have already found out the hard way.

Jesus, don't get me started on merging.
I merge off Glenmore to hiway 8 every day, and 2 weeks ago tried to haul some ******* out of his car that almost caused a multi vehicle head on accident that would have killed me, him, and whoever was driving the other way. Apparently he was too busy fingering me to see his life flash in front of his eyes.
