Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
FLA gives up Dylan McIlrath and a third round pick to DET for Thomas Vanek. DET retains 50 per cent of salary.

5 goals in 27 playoff games and was horrible in the olympics. This isn't a guy who puts a team over the top. Happy the Flames stayed away.

Ah, okay, that makes some sense - replaces Smith.

Detroit is selling hard but Vanek is useless.

Retain salary? I'd rather they retain Vanek entirely. The guy brings nothing.

I wish Buffalo had never matched that offer sheet.

Good trade for the Panthers. They've been needing some pure goal scoring outside of Huberdeau and Barkov all year...which is ironic since Huberdeau was hurt all year.

Reilly Smith has been terrible offensively this year, as has Jokinen (although Jokinen has heated up lately at least).

This might actually bump Jagr down a line since he's having trouble keeping up with Barkov and Huberdeau. Vanek might catch fire with those two down the stretch. Heads up for all you poolies.

I'm still not sure if the Panthers make the playoffs with this move, but it does help at least.

Is McIlrath the guy who was traded and waived a few times this year?

Yes. He is also the guy the Rangers drafted top 10 over Cam Fowler

To be fair, at the Olympics the only other NHL talent on Vanek's team is Michael Raffl and Michael Grabner, playing against pretty much the best everything else in the world. Not easy.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Conditional pick part of Vanek trade...if Florida makes the playoffs, Detroit gets Arizona's 3rd in 2017

That's sort of the point though... Vanek, to me, is not a player that ought to be relied upon when the going gets tough. I was actually really impressed with Grabner in that tournament, FWIW.

That is for dirt cheap. With salary retained. Hasn't Vanek been pretty good? That's essentially less than/the same as what they got for Jurco

Still wish he went to Edmonton after they offer sheeted him. They would have still sucked, and all those 1st rounders would have gone to Buffalo.

I remember when the Habs got this guy for their playoff run and eventually nicknamed him Thomas Vanish.

What a disappoint that was.
