There are other teams you can trade with Treliving.

I don't mind Vrbata, depending on the cost of course.

I would do this deal but doubt the Yotes or Flames would
Brouwer+Poirer/Shinkaruk
For
Vrbata+Duclair

I believe in the Jays.
|
Wideman or Brouwer would have to go back the other way. I don't want cap leakage into next season.

Dependent on the acquisition cost and the cap implications for next year, I think Vrbata would be a good pickup. A decent right-wing option for the top line if Ferland should falter. He's played with high skilled players before, and while clearly going to be a passenger on a line with Gaudreau he wouldn't be a burden. I think he would be one of the better bargain-bin pickups for the Flames. Again, dependent on cost.

I dislike this move because he was completely underwhelming in the Round One series with the Flames in 2015. Yes, he registered four points in six games, but from my recollection was almost entirely invisible.
He just doesn't seem like a good fit to me.

I'm basically for any trade where Wideman goes the other way.
Even Wideman for a slightly used water fountain for the janitorial closet.

He was so awful against the Flames in 2015 playoffs. If thencost was a 4th and there was noncap issue for next year sure why not but there is not enough upside here even if the cost is low

That's kind of what I meant. We're still rebuilding, old rentals are for teams that are already contenders and need a player or two to really solidify the team. I know the fear is falling into a perpetual rebuild but as this team is constructed now a player like vrbata makes no sense to me. Stay the course and look to add long term top 6 talent if possible.

Vrbata is a good player and it seems, for some reason, his price might actually be reasonable.

The guy wants a contract next year.
He needs to play over the last 20 games and getting minutes somewhere else is going to be better than sitting in the press box.

Trading a UFA 1 year after he chose to sign here could potentially drive up the price for future UFAs, or even have them avoid us altogether.

Live up to the contract you signed. Has Philly struggled to sign players after they traded 2 guys that signed 10+ year deals with them less than a year later?
Brouwer has been very lackluster this year and has a very bad contract going forward. Flames have a tough cap crunch coming up and not much room for bad contracts on the team.

Because somebody always puts up points on a ####ty team. Let him go somewhere else.

The team absolutely needs to continue to build towards the future, but if a short-term rental like Vrbata can be had for a third/fourth round pick, then that is an acceptable cost to increasing the possibility that the Flames win a playoff round.
Not that I am all that interested in Vrbata—I simply think that there are some short-term acquisitions that are worth the minimal cost they will command.

He's one of the few players in Arizona making valuable use of his minutes with crap line mates. What he's doing is actually impressive.
