I'm always a fan of cities standing up to professional sports' demand for public money towards a new facility. CalgaryNEXT, St. Louis' proposed MLS stadium, Coyotes new arena. Good.

It needs to become a trend to be effective, but I agree. Don't let private interests hijack the public purse. The problem is if one city without a team will do it, those that do have teams can be cajoled effectively.

The media doesn't understand the framework of this proposed deal at all, nor do the politicians..

This will take currently empty/unused land and allow it to create jobs/money for the general fund.

How is this bad? It's not like they're just asking for a handout. If the team is adding in the other half, isn't that what a partnership is all about?

The issue is likely Coyotes management. Everywhere they turn no one wants anything to do with the organization - ASU, Phoenix Suns and now Glendale. It's time to pack up and move on

The league likes having a city ready and willing to take a team that they can use as leverage against other cities. That's why they'll keep stringing out Quebec as long as they can.

The Coyotes may not have worked financially since they have moved from Winnipeg to Arizona, it is almost guaranteed that without them, the league would be robbed of Auston Matthews. Hockey is growing in the southern US, albeit slowly. They might just need a little more time.

it'd be my guess that the revitalization project in Glendale had similar arguments...obviously that hasn't worked out too well.

I am sure those folks also had a proforma that demonstrated all the benefits of the taxpayers helping to foot that bill.

when it comes to hockey, fool me once, shame on you...seems like the taxpayers of Arizona don't want to be fooled twice.
