Part of the reason the Flames were so firm in the contract negotiation was their serious concern with his off-ice habits. Mainly poor diet and lack of gym dedication, but also the odd late night out. But, he's young and not all athletes are going to have the best professionalism at his age - for every Crosby, St. Louis, and Jagr there is a Carter, Thornton, or Kane. You just bank on him maturing instead of panicking about it.

That said, Spector is a huge Oilers jock-sniffer so anything he says should be immediately disregarded. Plus he gets most of his Flames stuff from Roger Millions and we all know how accurate he is.

Maybe the bus was shorter than usual and the driver wouldn't let him on without his helmet.

Are you sure? The earning potential of CPers tends to be extremely high.

It's a fact that Johnny found an alternative way to arrive at practice on time.

Gio should have thrown Johnnys clothes into the shower, that would have learned him.

Or maybe he stayed with his family and simply took a taxi to the practice on purpose because he wasn't staying at the same hotel as the rest of the team.

This thread, along with what's going on in the trade rumours thread lately, illustrate perfectly why Canadian fans can't have nice things.

Or maybe he is a young man who likes to drink a bit too much and stay out late?

When stories about the Oilers players were coming out, we all laughed at the gong show, and they all used the exact same defenses for their players.

No one is accusing him of being a menace, but what is more likely:

1. A young player with unlimited money and who has always been a god given talent player doesn't focus on his off ice conditioning as much as he should and stays out drinking on days he shouldn't. A player who the Flames played hard ball with in negotiations for no real good reason unless they may be concerned about something. A player who was benched for showing up drunk or hungover to a late practice.

OR

2. The media is out to get the Flames, and all the rumors are made up by Johnny hating idiots....

Usually where there is smoke there is fire. It doesn't mean trade the guy, or lambast him. But do we have to turn a blind eye to these consistent rumors and assume they are all complete fabrications?

Although it is anecdotal, I regularly see visiting team players arrive in taxis for games separate from the buses. It's not every game, but it does happen.

What's more likely:

1. He was out with his folks and got so hammered he missed the team bus,

OR

2. He stayed with his family and simply cabbed to practice?

Just because he missed a practice once due to partying, does not automatically mean that was the case here.

What am I reading in this thread? And this post in particular? Johnny's now got a drinking problem and isn't committed to hockey. And this is why the Flames didn't want to sign him? Like, what?!?

I'm not a regular on TMZ but is there any proof anywhere that Johnny is staying out late and boozing it up? What consistent rumours? I'm not saying it's impossible but (without getting into player's personal lives) is this just pure and utter speculation? Based on being late for a practice last year and not being on the team bus this year (for reasons not yet identified)?

I'll own it if I'm proven wrong but this is a guy who wanted to do nothing but play hockey at the start of the season, and has pretty much worked his entire life to the sport (skipping out on his prom, etc). To say he's just coasting as "a god given talent hockey player" is just plain wrong -- you don't make it to the NHL at 5'9 and 165 without putting in the work.

Some huge leaps and bounds being made here by what is supposed to be his fanbase... I'm at a loss for words.
