This, to me, is a product of today's NHL. 10 years ago Nyquist would get pissed off by a cross check and then turn around and start cross checking back, until both guys threw down like men. Both get majors and play resumes. You turn around to fight and risk losing the puck battle, but back then both guys fought.

Now, Nyquist can't fight but still carries that pent up desire so he retaliates. It's dangerous because Spurgeon can lose an eye right there. Nobody is happy about taking a stick to the back when you're after the puck, so I see where Nyquist is coming from, but it sucks Spurg can't take his helmet off in a fight, and if Nyquist turns around to cross check he loses the puck. So he throws a quick stick swing to defend himself and it goes too high, catching Spurg in the nose.

And just like that Athanasiou scores on a fortunate bounce off the end boards. 4-3.

Yeah looks like the playoff streak is dead. Detroit would need to climb over 8 teams with 27 games left to make it in. I guess they theoretically only need to jump 5 to get to third in theit own Division. Still they've become a real mess with a lot of money committed to old decrepid players.

Quite the start to the Preds- Stars game. Eakin and Johansen scrap 20 seconds in and then 45 seconds in a big melee involving Faksa, Subban, Roussell, Fiddler among others.

According to SportsClubStats Dallas up 2-0 so far is good news for us.

Best case: Nashville regulation loss = +3%
Worst case: Nashville OT win = -1.7%

A Vancouver loss is only +0.4%, vs a -0.5% for a VAN win.

Jamie Benn and Sharp score power play goals and that is the score after one period.

Nick Leddy ties it at 1-1. It was a good period with the Islanders having the edge in shots, 13-11.

The Sharks took control in the second period as Thornton scored to make it 3-1. Ward scored an empty net goal, Sharks won 4-1. Schneider was the only reason the score was close, he faced 38 shots and half of them were in the first period (19-3 were the shots).

The Hometown Hockey this week is from Cochrane, Alberta. It was fun to watch, but, Sportsnet made no mention of the Canucks-Sabres game. I understand that the main game is the Habs-Bruins as there were pregame interviews in Boston, but, it should have been mentioned that Sportsnet Pacific viewers will see the Canucks game and have interviews from that venue.

I'm a little surprised how much Ryan Johansen seems to have plateaued so quickly.

Last 2 full seasons in CBJ:
2013-14 ___ 33 goals + 30 assists = 63 points, 0.77 PPG
2014-15 ___ 26 goals + 45 assists = 71 points, 0.87 PPG

Last season, split between Columbus and Nashville:
2015-16 ___ 14 goals + 46 assists = 60 points, 0.75 PPG

This season (projection)
2016-17 ___ 13 goals + 46 assists = 59 points, 0.72 PPG

Pretty consistent points production overall, but I thought he'd take another step or 2 forward.

Wow, 3-1 Stars now and all of their goals are on the power play. Devin Shore scored the most recent goal and Josi gets the Predators on the board.
