FWIW, they also fired their goalie coach:

#stlblues will confirm at presser this morning but along with coach Ken Hitchcock, hearing goalie coach Jim Corsi also let go.
What a shocking development. Goaltending struggles and a goalie coach takes part of the blame. Who knew that's how it works...

The Calgary Flames, not know how it works.

Hitch was going to retire anyway and this was not Hitch's fault, this was on Armstrong for trying to push Jake Allen as the starter, they should have kept Elliot, Elliot and Allen should have spilt the games.

Although I think Hitchcock would be a great candidate to coach this club, I don't see the flames replacing GG just yet.

They might be interested in looking at this in the offseason, but I think it would raise a few eye brows around the league if the flames were to fire a coach after one season.

Besides, Hitchcock has made it fairly clear he is in no rush to get back behind the bench. When or if he returns I bet it will be on his terms and pretty close to a perfect situation for him.

Thread title needs to be changed.

This is a Glen Gulutzan thread now, not a news thread about Hitch and the Blues.

Maybe Hitchcock already checked out mentally with retirement on the horizon. I have seen it happen to people before. Even people that displayed a high standard of work ethic throughout their career.

I mentioned in another thread that the loss of Brad Shaw from the coaching staff was a big loss. Hitch gets recognized as a defensive coach, but, imo, Shaw was the driver for the defensive schemes. Don't think it is a coincidence that Shaw's new team, the Blue Jackets, are now when of the best defensive teams, while the Blues are one of the worst

Armstrong is now in the hot seat. Yeo was his choice; he gave Allen a 4 year $17M+ contract extension; signed Stastny, Lehtera to big contracts; let Backes and Brouwer walk for nothing.

Good goaltending makes good coaches. For whatever reasons, the Blues could not keep pucks out of their net this season.

LOL, this is truth. What do Trotz, Quenneville, Vigneault, and Tortorella all have in common with each other this year? Amazing goaltending.

this was supposed to be hitchcock's last ride into the sunset, he's put up with one year deals and the like, while running the blues quite successfully and they can him a game before he catches al arbour.
crappy way for hitchcock to have to retire.

Would remove Vigneault from that list, but point remains

Exactly.
Title should read 'Should Flames fire Gulutzan for retired coach?'
Please also add poll

I follow the blues. this move was overdue. So is Jon Cooper in Tampa Bay. He's got to go as well.

Truth be told I could live with another season of GG as long as Sigalet gets the axe. I will say their goaltending has been pretty good for years so maybe he's being made a scapegoat here. It's certainly nothing like the situation of the Flames since Sigalet joined the team where almost every goaltender they bring in plays considerably worse than they did prior to the Flames. I'm aware that the Flames terrible defense plays a role but you can't ignore the sheer amount of soft goals five different Flames goaltenders have let in over the past few seasons.

I'm pretty sure anytime a big name head coach becomes available this will be the norm until Gulutzan is fired.

I think Hitchcock would have the same effect as Keenan (more bad then good). I think this season for STL has shown that he has one foot out the door towards retirement and people are swayed by name and past record (similar to the whole Iginla debate). Let him walk away into retirement.

Elliott Friedman was just on STL radio; he thinks Vegas makes a push for Hitch

Can't see Hitch being interested in starting from scratch with an expansion team, unless he just wants to mail in his near-retirement years

no way that was ever going to work, Hitch coaching with his successor right beside him.

Yeo now goes from good cop to bad cop
