Maybe Friedman et al are only tlaking about the 33 already named?

Quote:
The First 33: Players from 1917-1966
The 100 Greatest NHL Players is a centerpiece in honoring 100 years of NHL hockey. A Blue Ribbon panel comprised of distinguished members of the hockey community - including executives, media members and NHL alumni - selected the list of esteemed players. Here are the first 33 players, who played predominantly during the NHL's first half century, from 1917-1966.
The remaining 67 members, those who played predominantly from 1967 through to present, will be named at THE NHL100™, a star-studded event open to the public on Jan. 27 during NHL All-Star weekend in Los Angeles. Go to NHL.com/100Tix to get your tickets now.
Emphasis mine.

Looks like the first 33 were mostly pre-modern era. Almost all the rest will be more current.

So yeah, I'd be shocked if Iggy didn't make the list.

I wonder how many Flames. Hull and MacInnis would be for sure. Maybe Fuhr, Nieuwendyk? Is anybody gonna be surprised when Fleury makes some butthurt comments about being left off the list?

Geno Malkin isn't on the list. That's confirmed. I know this is a Flames forum but that's a far bigger omission than Iginla.

Art Ross, Rocket Richard, Hart Trophy, Conn Smythe, Ted Lindsay, Stanley Cup.

Iginla is almost 40, has a family and kids so he probably wants to take the time off to spend time with them rather than be at an event that really doesn't matter.

I'd be shocked if he didn't make the list. He was one of the best players in the league in the dead puck era and one of the best players in the last 20 years.

I don't think Iginla is on the list. I'm pretty sure he's not from everything I've heard/read.

Not even close to as big an omission as Iggy.

He's only 30 and doesn't even have 1000 points.

Crosby isn't even 30 and doesn't even have a 1000 points. Stop being a homer.

Oh come on. Crosby is a generational talent and is a far better player than Malkin.

If Crosby never played another game, he still easily makes this list. If Malkin retired tomorrow, he's in tough.

Crosby career pts/gm: 1.32
Malkin career pts/gm: 1.17

Malkin's career numbers have been limited by injury. I would never make the case that Malkin is better than Crosby, but it's not as big of a gap as you might think it is....along with taking into consideration personal awards.

They have both been remarkable players.

I would say Thornton being left off would be a bigger omission imo. I wonder if Pronger counts?

Obviously most of us have biases towards more recent players but I fully expect the NHL to NHL it up with this list and name 94 guys hardly anyone remembers and then the aforementioned 6.

Recency bias is one thing but naming a bunch of guys who won 5 Stanley Cups in a 6 team league (or similar type stats/awards etc) seems far more short sighted.

If Pronger counts he's one of the six for sure. If not him, Chara has more points and Weber and Burns have better per game stats stats than Keith (and almost as many points). Keith just isn't good enough. Nor unusual enough, if I can put it that way.

It was done by a bunch of writers invited by the NHL, not the NHL itself. But there will be a tendency to include old era guys for the hell of it. I heard one contributor say as much - he practically allocated spots per era.

It's not six from the modern era...it's six players currently playing.

Wait, is the rumour that there are only 6 active players?

That makes a lot more sense even though I'd consider putting Keith and possibly Kane/Toews ahead of Iggy, Thornton etc to be highly suspect. I get they have the rings but they simply don't have the longevity. At least Crosby and Ovi are one-of-a-kind players, even if their overall career numbers aren't as high as some other guys like Iggy, Thornton etc.

Yeah I should have realized that.

I'm less shocked by the exclusion of some guys, just not as much as before.

Fleury would be on my list. Say what you want about the guy's off ice antics, what he went thru to make it to the NHL and then be one of the game's best players in the 1990s given his pint size - he makes the list for me. Keep in mind too that the game's best ever player - Gretzky - specifically wanted Fleury on the 2002 salt lake team.

It's going to be a pretty tough list to make. There are 271 players in the HHOF, meaning there are going to be some really great players left off the list.

For current players Sid, Ovi, and Jagr are no-brainers. I'm not sold on Toews, Kane, and Keith being the other 3.
