It's definitely a position management should be evaluating. Goaltenders seem to play worse when they suit up for the Flames. Maybe it's just a matter of not getting good enough goaltenders but you would hope the goaltending coach could coach up at least one or two goaltenders over the years as it seems no goaltenders improve once they put on a Flames jersey and most in fact play below expectations.

This is a valid point about the goalie coach, I think one of reasons why a good coach will never come to Calgary is because he won't have a chance to pick his own assistants, he would be forced with the crap the Flames have.

I think hoping for Gillies to start the year in the NHL next year is a bit of a long shot at this point. He hasn't shown any sort of consistency at the AHL level. IMO Gillies has been very over rated up to this point. I think he can play in the NHL, I just don't think we have the next Carey Price or Matt Murray on our hands. Maybe Jake Allen is probably where I would put his peak. Just my opinion.
The goalie I would target is Phillipp Grubauer, he has just put up solid numbers at every level. I think a tandem of him and Johnson for next year would be pretty solid. Washington is at risk of losing him for nothing at the expansion draft, so if we could swoop in and get him for a pick or prospect, it would be a solid pick up.

I wouldn't say overrated and more that his development was sidetracked by injury and he's struggled to get back on track a bit. He looks like he's at least two more years away right now because he's getting outplayed by other goaltenders.

I would say even going back to college his numbers were more a result of the team and defensive system that was in front of him than it was Gillies himself. When Gillies left Nick Ellis stepped in and put up better numbers than Gillies. When he went to the WJC and played against top competition the results were less than stellar.
I think a lot of us were blinded by the eye popping numbers in college, but when you look closer a lot of goalies put up those type of numbers at the college level.
I am not saying he won't be a starter at the NHL level, I just don't see a star goalie when I watch Gillies play.

Let's get rid of Sigalet first before we start ruining any more goalie's careers.

I'm excited about the possibility of Parsons in the long term. Gillies has fallen off a little but the potential is still there.

Meh, the thread is more current day than that. Parsons will be ready long after we're supposed to be contending if he pans out.
He's definitely an exciting prospect (well, as exciting as a goalie prospect can be with their random success and failures) but if he's who we're looking at as the next fit for this club then we may as well sell off all our assets and start the rebuild over again cause it's going to be years until we even know if he's a bonafide starter.
edit: You did say long term, I guess.

I think Gillies needs some more AHL time as a starter. Whoever we bring in next year as a starter, I think you'll see Rittich as their backup.

Get rid of the goalie coach. Such a likable guy but plain and simple he's not getting it done.
Frankly I think you just keep one of the guys we have now. I'm not convinced Johnson is as good as we've seen, and Elliott definitely isn't as bad as we've seen. By the end of the year one of them will prove themselves I think.

Bishop seems to get hurt at critical times. I doubt this lessens with age.

2 years in a row we've had 6 goalies come through and none could find enough consistency in their game to take the starter's role. Almost the exact same problem as last season with completely different goalies, one with a history of elite play.
I agree, I think some accountability should fall on the goalie coach.
Wtf are you doing up there, Mr. Treliving? Anything?

Johnson's been the closest. Heck, he was Vezina calibre for about a month and a half, and could still succeed here with a little more defensive support.
Elliott hasn't shown he can be a reliable 1B, let alone carry the load as a 1A or a legit starter. He's better than any of the guys we've had last year, but like so many on our team has struggled this season.
The next few months will be interesting to see which of these guys decides they want to be offered a contract next year. What I'd like to see is to have either Rittich or Gillies earn the backup spot next year (loser becomes the starter for Stockton). I also agree that Sigalet hasn't shown anything (results-wise) to suggest he's part of the solution going forward.

I'd like to see a goaltender grow from within. It'd be nice to see Gillies succeed, preferably sooner rather than later.
Goalies tend to take longer, but that doesn't mean that early twenties starters don't exist.

I really think Parsons could be one of those guys, he is already so solid in all aspects of goaltending. I don't expect him to come in next year and be the guy but with his abilities I could see it when he is 22 or so.

This. Before we commit to anyone, Sigaret should be shown the door. NO ONE has improved under his so-called guidance.
But hopefully Mrazek can be had for cheap...

Gillies I feel needs at least another year in the minors. Maybe even two. I think patience will defintely be needed with him. I mean he missed a full year of development and has been average so far this season. I still feel he'll be good and potentially our franchise goalie it just may take longer then expected.
I still like Elliott and would like to see him given the role for a bit here. Give him the next couple weeks and either he sinks or he proves he can be a number 1 for us.

I am reminded of the Young Guns era between Vernon and Kipper where the Flames brought in goalie after goalie with disastrous results.
I have no idea what that goaltending solution is but if history repeats itself the Flames will have competent goaltending in 2022.
