I've been watching hockey for a while, and one thing I have noticed is that every good player gets hacked and whacked and hit and charged and high-sticked and generally mistreated. On every team, all the time, forever.

I think Don Cherry has created a myth that Wayne Gretzky was always "safe" because Dave Semenko was around. That's a, umm, myth.

Just an aside - Semenko was a dirty player who kicked, sucker punched, kneed, and jumped guys. And that's just Tim Hunter!

The fairweather Flames fan thread touches on this subject. Hockey in general has lost a lot of toughness and intimidation and it doesn't sit well with a lot of fans.

Truthfully, I think even fans who proclaimed to "hate" all the rough stuff and fighting kind of miss it now.
