Huntingwhale, you're absolutely spot on.

I remember at one point, you would be able to count on a big DJ playing at Flames Central almost weekly during the summer. It was absolutely incredible. The Deadmau5 concert I remember was supposed to be a Thursday night stop. That show sold out within minutes, so he added a Friday show, which I got tickets to. But because of high demand, he also added a Saturday night show shortly afterwards.

The place turned into an absolute #### hole though which is a shame. The last show I went to, the place was about 80% gangsters in their mid 40s, all staring each other down.

Absolutely despised the venue for shows, just too hard to navigate around the tables. Not enough room to get anywhere, hated the layout for watching bands.

I wish every band would play the Mac Hall Ballroom upstairs, great sounding room and easy to get in and out.

But all the problems just compounded and made it a place that ended up being a stink hole.
I doubt a name change is going to eliminate any of those problems as long as the same people are still running the place. From what I remember, those issues were what led to the original Palace Nightclub getting shut down.

Interesting. Maybe I was only there during the tail end of the Palace days when it sucked and kept myself insulated by mostly going to suburban bars (Outlaws, etc) in my bar star days, but the Palace to me always felt like the kind of place where you get stabbed. Pretty shady crew in there when I was there. Still the only bar I was ever asked to turn my hat around, that usually speaks to the type of crowd they dealt with there.

..but Calgary has become a much more cosmopolitan city than it was in the early 2000's, maybe the new Palace would reflect more of that swanky, Stephen Avenue vibe this time around.

The last time I stepped foot in Flames Central was when they were promoting the Canucks playoff run in 2011. What a sh*t show that was. Never been back since. Good riddance.

The thread regarding Flames Central and the Canucks playoff run is a good read too!

Funny read! I wasn't a CPer at the time but definitely remember this being a big deal. Such a stupid decision.

A few of my Palace/FC memories:
-Striking out hard with the ladies on my 19th birthday.
-Attending a few Flames games and loving the atmosphere but hating the prices and service.
-My final time for a pretty good Bad Religion show. I agree with the poster above who said it was mediocre for concerts and no comparison to the Mac Hall Ballroom.

Goodbye, FC. I hardly knew ye (I went there once).

However I went to the Palace many, many times in my teens and early 20s and have various memories of the place. Some of the fondest of which (not involving girls) were going there on a Saturday night and mingling around the bar watching the Flames second half of the HNIC doubleheader on the smallish TV screen at a time when no one of my age group gave a crap about the team.

Dibs on the massive Vernon statue.

Was there ever any memorabilia displayed? I think that was the original plan way back when but they had insurance issues or something...

Never went there when it was a night club, never went there when it was Flames Central.

Last time I was there, was for Jedi in 83. Good times.

Held firm after the 2011 Canucks boycott. I have such a strong will. That and I had a kid in 2011 and gave up on going out. Good times.
